COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG

On Your Radar
Colonial Williamsburg has an unending stream of special events and presentations, but here are some upcoming highlights: School tours visit Colonial Williamsburg.
COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION

UNDER THE REDCOAT
(June 25-27) | The town is filled with hundreds of British Army re-enactors who re-create the British occupation of Williamsburg in 1781. (See website for full schedule)

Bradley also advises retirees, or other groups without children, to think about avoiding the April-May period, when the town is especially crowded with school groups of all grade levels. And of course, the summer is a popular time for family visits. Early fall through November is an ideal time, with fewer visitors, and mild weather. Bus tours usually break into two or more groups for walking the Historic Area (groups of 25 or less are ideal). For those staying for just a morning or afternoon session, it might be best to avoid the “big draws,” the Capitol Building and Governor’s Palace, which can easily consume two hours. Jim suggests instead taking in the domestic sites, trade shops, and some of the shorter theatrical programs. In addition, he proposes groups “mixing

and matching” their experiences. “A group might consider two ‘different’ tours,” Bradley suggests, “One half perhaps visiting the Governor’s palace and the trade shops, the other the Capitol building and some homes. It makes a nice opportunity to sharing different experiences.” And certainly, he recommends any group to take advantage of the experienced group tour staff at Colonial Williamsburg as you configure the hours or days you’ll have at the site. They can help special interest groups make their stay especially memorable. To take just one example, there are 80 acres of gardens around the town, prime viewing for any gardening club. Oh, there is one last piece of advice from Bradley. “Wear comfortable shoes!”

PRELUDE TO VICTORY
(October 8-10) | It’s the Continental Army’s turn, also with hundreds of re-enactors, re-creating the days just before the final Siege of Yorktown. (See website for the full schedule)

THE GRAND ILLUMINATION
(Sunday, Dec. 5) | An immensely popular event each year, the Grand Illumination marks the beginning of the holiday season. Candles are lit in the town’s windows, and spectacular fireworks begin after sundown in three simultaneous displays around the historic area.
