Travel Resource: The Great Lakes

Water World
Explore the outdoors one waterway at a time ANOTHER ROADSIDE ATTRACTION
Long before it referred to unwanted e-mails from Nigerian princes, Spam was a welcome part of the family meal. Introduced in 1937 by Hormel Foods, the canned meat product has since become a staple of American popular culture—in Hawaii, it’s so popular both McDonald’s and Burger King added it to their menus. Spam fans (or groups curious about its actual ingredients) should check out the Spam Museum in Austin, site of Hormel’s headquarters. The 16,500-square-foot center dedicated to all things Spam, features vintage advertising, an exhibit on Spam and World War II, a Wall of Spam, and tote board counting the number of cans sold. Clients can even dress up like factory workers and “package” their own Spam. And, if groups get hungry, they can always enjoy a bite of free Spam. ✱ SPAM Museum Austin | (800) LUV-SPAM www.spam.com

Boundary Waters Canoe

Area

innesota license plates boast that it’s “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”— but the claim is a little off. The official estimate leans more toward, well, 12,000. Sure, the winters are a bit brutal, but there’s no better way to show clients the natural beauty of this Great Lake state through its ample waterways. Built around the Mississippi, Minnesota, and St. Croix rivers, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul offer plenty of water activities for groups. Above the Falls Sports, provide kayak excursions for groups along the Mississippi. Tours get paddlers up close and personal with the river’s lock-and-dam system, bring them into the Mississippi River Gorge, under Stone Arch Bridge, and over to John Pillsbury Park. Once clients have conquered the river by kayak, head up-river to Itasca State Park, where they can do it on foot. The mighty Mississippi starts in this 32,000-acre park, and visitors can hop

along rocks to cross the headwaters. The Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center offers outdoor interpretive displays on the plaza, along with a cafeteria-style restaurant. The park also has 49 miles of hiking trails, 16 miles of paved bike paths, and guided tours. Situated within the Superior National Forest, the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area is a collection of more than 1,000 lakes and streams connected by more than 1,200 miles of canoe trails. The Gunflint Trail, a 58mile scenic byway, brings groups into the forest to the Boundary Waters region. It’s the closest a motorized vehicle can get to the area.
