Flight To Freedom

Hear stories of courage along the Underground Railroad trails
Lorain County’s proximity to Lake Erie played a vital role in the railroad. Groups can go On the Trail to Freedom in Lorain County, stopping at the First Church of Oberlin, headquarters of the Oberlin Anti-Slavery Society; Westwood Cemetery, final resting place of many runaway slaves and abolitionists, and the Oberlin Heritage Center, site of the renovated Monroe House, home of Giles Shurteleff, a Civil War hero. An increasingly popular way to explore the Underground Railroad is by bike. Brown County in southern Ohio offers three routes of varying difficulty on its pre-packaged Freedom’s Landing, the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route tours.

Railroad National Underground Freedom Center

ong before it became a much coveted battle state in Presidential elections, Ohio found itself at the center of many America political and social issues. Perhaps most notable was the role Ohio played in the 19th century abolition of slavery. Because of its location along the Ohio River, which separated free states and slaves states, it became a key player in the Underground Railroad. An ideal place to start an Under-

ground Railroad tour is the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, which recounts the dramatic stories of slaves and the “conductors” who helped them. A centerpiece of the museum is a 21-foot by 30-foot, two-story log slave pen built in 1830. Clients can continue their immersion in railroad history along the Clermont Freedom Trail in Clermont County. The trail includes 33 sites, 19 of which are approved by the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom—the most in the country.
