THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR II MUSEUM

ouisiana’s role in history makes it an ideal destination for fans of military history. Groups intrigued by World War II must include a stop at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Founded by Steven Ambrose, author of Band of Brothers, the museum dissects the American war experience—why we fought, how it was won, and what it means to Americans today. This summer, the museum opened the 14,000-square-foot John E. Kushner Restoration Pavilion, a $300 million expansion that provides the public with a behind-the-scenes view of the restoration and preservation of World War II artifacts. Groups can watch as conservators work to repair and restore boats, vehicles, and other military equipments that played a key role in the war. But the Big Easy isn’t the only Louisiana city active in the homefront effort during World War II. Monroe, in Northeast Louisiana, was home to the Selman Field Army-Air Force Navigation School, which offered the country’s only complete navigation course during the war. Today,

its grounds house the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum of Louisiana, dedicated to honoring the men and women who played a part in the country’s aviation and military history. Groups can explore exhibits from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and both Gulf Wars. Head to Baton Rouge to revisit World War II’s naval campaigns, with a tour of the USS Kidd & Veteran Memorial, the only known destroyer preserved in her World War II configuration. Considered one of the most authentically restored military vessels, the destroyer also served during the Korean War and the Cold War. Every fourth of July, her guns return to life with a dramatic re-enactment of a World War II-era air battle.

The year Natchitoches (pronounced NACK-uhtush), Louisiana’s oldest city and the oldest settlement of the Louisiana Purchase, was established. Founded by the French, the city has preserved its colonial character in its 33-block historic district. Brick-lined Front Street cuts through the heart of the district, replete with wrought-iron balconies, restaurants, galleries, and shops. The city gained the national spotlight as the quaint backdrop for the Julia Roberts-tearjerker Steel Magnolias. A must for foodies is Natchitoches meat pie: a blend of ground beef, ground pork, onions, garlic, peppers, and spices in a deep-fried flaky, pastry shell. This local favorite is a specialty of the aptly named Lasyone’s Meat Pie Restaurant and the star of the Annual Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival in September. ✱ Historic Natchitoches | Natchitoches www.historicnatchitoches. com | (800) 259-1714
