TITANIC AT 100

the shipwreck site on April 15th in memory of every person that was on the boat. Finally, the two museums will also have huge galas on April 14 and 15 to commemorate the sinking of the ship. It’s shaping up to be a big year for his museums. Joslyn built his first Titanic museum, which he has since sold, in Orlando in 1999, followed by two massive ship-shaped museums in Branson, Mo. and, most recently, in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. He says the two buildings are 50 percent scale replicas of the front half of the Titanic built by English craftsmen that sculpt and mold the side of the ship to make it look like it’s made of iron plates and rivets. Joslyn boasts that every detail is exactly to scale, just as it would be on the ship. “We worked off the blueprints from [the Titanic’s builder] Harland and Wolff and off the design archives at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, which is just up the road from the shipyard where the Titanic was assembled.” The result is a three-deck re-creation of the Titanic that contains 20 galleries with nearly 400 authentic Titanic artifacts. Reproduced inside are third-class quarters, a first-class suite, dining rooms, and an exact reproduction of the Titanic’s grand staircase. Joslyn says that they even built the iceberg as accurately as possible, which means that workers have to shave down the 12-foot-by-12-foot bock of ice at Pigeon Forge (the Branson iceberg is a bit smaller) every so often because it’s constantly growing more ice. Joslyn says that there are more ship-shaped museums planned—he’s talked to New York, Shanghai, London, Dallas, Niagara Falls—but he doesn’t have any firm commitments yet for new buildings. But these museums are about more than re-creating the Titanic’s blueprint and display artifacts. They are designed to give visitors a sense for the experience of being on board the Titanic. On entering the Pigeon Forge museum, for example, a costumed crewmember hands you a White Star Line boarding pass, which is imprinted with the name of an actual passenger. The museums also have an interactive area called the Tot-Titanic, which gives children under five a place to climb through portals, build a boat with magnets, and even steer the ship around an iceburg. A popular section of Tot-Titanic features Polar, a stuffed bear that was rescued alongside the little boy who owned him. Polar is the subject of a well-known children’s book written by the boy’s mother and later discovered and published by Little, Brown and Company. Told from perspective of the bear, the tale chronicles the travel adventures of the family and their

n January, the Titanic Museums in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. opened a door to one of the most-watched movies of all time—the “Behind the Scenes of James Cameron’s Titanic” exhibit. Through photos and movie collectibles, the exhibit goes inside the making of James Cameron’s epic drama, just months prior to the April release of the 3-D version of the film. The exhibit will feature props, costumes, scripts, and other valuable collectibles from the film. ★ For more information, visit www.titanicattraction.com or call (800) 381-7670.
