TITANIC AT 100
Polar The Titanic Bear tells the story of a family’s narrow escape from the Titanic.

The RMS collection now numbers 5,500 artifacts and is part of two permanent installations in Orlando and Las Vegas, as well as five semi-permanent Titanic: The Artifact Exhibitions currently showing at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, at the San Diego Natural History Museum, at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore, at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and at Union Station in Kansas City. Over the past 18 years, more than 25 million people worldwide have had a chance to see what life was actually like onboard the ship through these exhibits. They all operate in a similar fashion, with each visitor being handed a boarding pass that has the name of one of the Titanic passengers and a short biography. Throughout the exhibit, display cases hold reminders of everyday life: a hairpin, a pipe, letter openers, wine bottles, and eyeglasses of the many that perished that day. At the Vegas installation, visitors can see the crow’s nest bell rung by lookout Frederick Fleet to signal the iceberg that brought the ship down. At the San Diego exhibit, visitors can see china from the first-class dining room. The idea is to make it feel as if you are actually on the ship. While these artifact exhibits will continue, they may do so under new management. RMS Titanic plans to auction the entire 5,500-piece collection on April 11 in one big bundle. “The big auction is being put on my old partners and the stuff they’re auctioning off is from our expedition in 1987 and from the numerous trips they’ve made back to the wreck site over the past 25 years,” says Joslyn. The appraised value of the collection is $189 million and includes everything from gold coins and dress buttons to a 17-ton piece of the Titanic’s hull wall. And whatever group ponies up for this massive undersea treasure also assumes the responsibility of maintaining the shipwreck site and keeping many of the items in the public eye through various exhibits. When he broke from his partners in the late 1990s, Joslyn decided to create his own museum using artifacts that didn’t

have any controversy tied to them. The fact that RMS Titanic and other groups had been making money from items collected from the shipwreck upset some of the survivors’ families as well as Robert Ballard, the oceanographer who discovered the wreck in 1985. “I knew there were artifacts that had been found floating on the ocean during the night of the disaster,” says Joslyn. “I found a collector in England who had about 80 pieces I leased from him. Then we started buying artifacts, and we continue to buy more every year.” In the Titanic world there are two big auctions every year, one in London and one in New York. Joslyn says every year something surprising always shows up at these auctions because so many artifacts have remained with the friends and families of survivors passed down through generations until someone just wants to get rid of it. With interest in the Titanic at an all time high, there’s bound to be plenty of buyers at the upcoming auctions. And every artifact presents another opportunity to tell a story. “We’re always looking to commemorate the ship and the passenger and crew that were on board by telling their stories,” says Joslyn. Here’s hoping that the stories continue to be told in another 100 years.

It cost $7,500,000 to build the Titanic. Today it would cost an estimated $400,000,000.
