Leaving Las Vegas

QUICK TIP
The Hoover Dam Visitor Center is open every day of the year except for Thanksgiving and Christmas days.

T

A bevy of attractions await groups off the Strip

he Las Vegas Strip can suck groups in. Between the shopping, theater, museums, gaming and dining, a visitor could (and probably has) spend their entire stay in just one casino. Easy day trips showcase many of the state’s finest attractions away from the glitz and glam of Vegas. History and engineering buffs will enjoy the Hoover Dam, a modern marvel in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, 30 miles outside the city along the NevadaArizona border. Thirty-minute and one-hour guided tours of the power plant and dam are available. Recently completed, the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, located 1,500 feet south of the dam, offers spectacular views once afforded only to helicopter tours. A walkway on the bridge brings visitors 900 feet above the Colorado River. Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake in the Western Hemisphere, was created when the Hoover Dam was built and today it’s a popular recreation spot for locals and tourists. Activities include swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking outdoors, or enjoy the sights with a ride on the Lakeshore Scenic

Drive or Northshore Road. With the waters of Lake Mead receding due to drought, direct your clients to the remains of St. Thomas, a town that was abandoned and flooded after the dam was built. Groups with an adventurous spirit will enjoy the 17-mile trip from the Strip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a bounty of unique geologic features, including towering red cliffs. One of the more visually striking sites is the Keystone Thrust fault, where gray limestone rocks were

pushed over younger red sandstone rocks. On the 13-mile scenic drive to the entrance, visitors can also spot cacti, yucca, Joshua trees, and the occasion big horn sheep.

On The Trail
Kit Carson gained fame for mapping the West in the mid-19th century—Nevada paid tribute to him by naming the capital city after him. Clients can follow his path along the Kit Carson Trail, a walking tour of Carson City’s residential district. A map and podcast are available through the Carson City Nevada CVB.
