my suggestion of adding a one-day visit
to Dry Tortugas National Park, unique
among all 401 current sites administered by our National Park Service, will
undoubtedly answer in the affirmative.
What is it that makes Dry Tortugas
unique? First, and surprisingly enough,
it’s neither in nor near Key West, but
some 70 miles west, out in the Gulf of
Mexico. The park actually encompasses
about 100 square miles, mostly open
ocean that is known for its beautiful,
sky-blue waters, outstanding coral reefs
and marine life, but it also includes
seven small sand and reef islands.
Obviously, no one is going to drive a
coach to this national park, but there
are two options from which operators
can choose. One is a very scenic, lowaltitude flight by seaplane, which is
definitely faster (a 40-minute flight each
way), but on the expensive side, plus
several of these small aircraft are sure
to be required to accommodate a typical
group. Key West Seaplane Adventures
offers both half and full-day excursions.
The more practical choice, however, is
by high-speed (30 miles per hour) Yankee Freedom ocean-going catamarans
that accommodate up to 150 passengers
and offer reasonable group rates. Departing every morning from Key West
at 8 a.m., these full-day excursions
include continental breakfast, sandwich
buffet luncheon, a 40-minute guided
tour of the fort, complimentary use of
snorkeling equipment, and a return to
town by 5:15 or 5:30 p.m. The crossing
takes about 2 hours each way, depending
on weather conditions, with a stay of
4 hours at Garden Key, where massive
Fort Jefferson is located. Guests are
invited to bring a bathing suit, beach
towel and change of clothing for sunning
or swimming in the warm Gulf waters,
and both snack and beverage bars are
available aboard the vessels.
Garden Key’s fi rst 1825 lighthouse,
later superseded by an taller, improved
design on Loggerhead Key in 1856, was
intended to provide a navigational aid
in these hazardous, relatively shallow

waters where numerous shipwrecks
had occurred. Fort Jefferson itself is
truly an amazing site—although never
completed. This massive, six-sided
brick behemoth is America’s largest allmasonry fort and second largest coastal
fort ever constructed (only Fort Monroe
National Monument in Hampton, Va.
is larger), and has a most interesting
history. Begun in 1847, it was intended
to protect the 75-mile-wide straits
between the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic
Ocean. Construction continued during
the Civil War, when it was used as a
military prison, but work was halted in
1874 when the fort was abandoned by
the Army due to fears that adding additional bricks and cannons would overly
stress the existing structure.
Among those imprisoned here was
Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who

treated John Wilkes Booth’s broken leg
following the assassination of President
Lincoln. In later years, Garden Key
was used as a coaling station for naval
vessels, and in 1898, it was the fi nal stop
for the battleship USS Maine before
her ill-fated arrival and explosion in
Havana Harbor, igniting the SpanishAmerican War. Since Fort Jefferson
never saw actual combat, and even
though restoration and stabilization
projects have been necessary to counter
the effects of time, weather and water, it
is generally in good condition. Exploring the structure, its decorative brickwork, historic cannons, 2,000 arches,
1876 Harbor Light and grounds are
virtually guaranteed to please general
interest travelers, photographers and
history buffs alike.

The Firefly Grill in Effingham, Illinois, is just one of the great
experiences your group will enjoy in Effingham. The Firefly
Grill offers a variety of activities. T
ake a tour of the garden and
watch as they gather ingredients for the dishes of the day. Enjoy
a stroll around Lake Kristie and stop to feed the fish. Or, just
relax on the screened porch, as you take in the beautiful scenery.
