On the

The Sweet Sound of Tourism

M

aybe you can’t hear it, but the
sound to me is deafening. tourism
in the North america is doing well.
I had the pleasure of going to
two great shows in the past month,
in addition to my other travels.
at both of those shows, representing two different and distinct markets, everyone was
upbeat and positive about the state of travel.
In early june, I was pleased to join my colleagues and
members at the travel alliance Partners’ (taP) annual
taP Dance in Norfolk, Va. Norfolk, as well as their

partners, rolled out the red carpet for taP, and I was
glad aBa could be a part of this amazing meeting by
sponsoring one of the taP Dance lunches.
Everyone I met with and talked to at the taP meeting was positive and upbeat about the current state of
travel. Each of the individuals and the business they
represent told me that business was up. they shared
with me where that business was coming from and how
the business climate had changed over the past five
years. they told me about some of the new and innovative things they were doing to attract new customers.
at the same time, everyone was clear in their message
to me that business is different, and what gets the
customer to their destination, property, or attraction
is not the same as it was a decade ago. Products, tours,
attractions, and destinations have always to be fresh,
creative, and enticing to the operators and to operators’ customers.

later in june, aBa exhibited at IPW (formerly
known as PoW WoW) in las Vegas. In addition to our
membership staff and I, we were joined in the booth by
the executive director of student youth travel association (syta) and by representatives from aBa member
companies: Christian tours/Burke International (NC),
grand avenue World Wide (tN), and Vacations by rail
(Il). thank you to all our members and syta partner
who worked to promote the industry at IPW, and to the
more than 300 aBa members who attended.
the u.s. travel association sponsors IPW, and it is
the gathering point for overseas tour operators who
buy u.s. product (i.e. send groups to the u.s.). through
Brand usa and initiatives that have been put into place
by the u.s. Department of Commerce and the state Department, visitors to the u.s. exceeded 50 million last
year for the first time in many years. the u.s. is a hot
destination now, and the 6,500 attendees at IPW, who
were there either buying u.s. travel, or selling it, were
all expressing how well travel is doing not only here but
around the world.
If those two shows are any indication of success, and
I believe they certainly are, the prospects for travel
the remainder of the year and in future years looks
very bright. I can’t wait to hear about more good travel
news. If you have great stories about the uptick in
travel where you work, please e-mail me at ppantuso@
buses.org.
sincerely,
