afTerMarkeT Mergers anD aCquIsITIons The dollar value of merger and acquisition deals in the U.S. automotive parts and accessories industry increased 27.1 percent in 2008 over 2007. A total of 44 reported mergers and acquisitions occurred among aftermarket manufacturers, distributors and retailers in 2008. Manufacturers accounted for 59.1 percent of the industry’s 2008 mergers and acquisitions with 26 deals, a slight decrease from 31 deals in 2007. Some noteworthy acquirers included Thornwood Associates LP Icahn Enterprises , Holdings LP and Westinghouse Air Brake Tech. Wholesaler mergers and acquisitions experienced an increase in 2008, with 15 deals made, marking the third highest number of deals since 1998. The largest disclosed of these deals included O’Reilly Automotive Inc.’s, acquisition of CSK Auto Inc. for $1,029.4 million.
