One such event took place in Sacramento, Calif., hosted by CalRecycle, the Car Care Council and the California Automotive Wholesalers’ Association. Twenty organizations partnered to host the event that included car care demonstrations, childrens’ activities, food and refreshments, raffles, t-shirts, hats and gift cards (see partner list in box). Local advertising and public relations drove nearly 100 motorists to bring their vehicles for free inspections. Results of the vehicle inspections revealed that more than half of the vehicles need service, fluids or new parts. Rising gas prices and the lingering economic hardships in many parts of the country, drove interest among consumers and the consumer media for the Car Care Council’s content on cutting fuel costs through proper vehicle maintenance. The widespread local and national publicity helped attract attention to Car Care Month events with free consumer vehicle inspections hosted by aftermarket businesses and organizations around the country in April. Generous and early promotional support by the aftermarket trade media peaked interest among WDs, repair shops “This event in California is a great example of how organizations can easily partner to put on a simple inspection event to benefit the community,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Involving local businesses, government agencies and other groups brings goodwill in the community, and the consumers have fun, while learning about their car, and ultimately benefiting the industry too.” 8 | AFTERMARKET INSIDER | VOLUME 70 Car Care Council California Automotive Wholesalers’ Association (CAWA) California Bureau of Automotive Repair California Highway Patrol (CHP) Citrus Heights Police Department Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) Akebono Brake AutoZone Baxter Auto Parts Customerlink Duncan’s Automotive Exide Technologies Firestone of Citrus Heights Genuine Parts Company/Napa Kniesel’s Auto Service Center NGK Spark Plugs Riebe’s Auto Parts Scott’s Econo Lube N’ Tune & Brakes Tenneco Sunrise Mall Chipotle Coca Cola/Mellow Yellow CalRecycle Event Partners
