The AHEPAN - Fall 2009 - 19

U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes discusses the environment with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew at a Capitol Hill luncheon. graduates are environmentally literate. The legislation has spawned a movement of nearly 1,500 local, regional, and national organizations representing tens-of-millions of concerned citizens who support a new commitment to environmental education. On November 2, 2009, I was humbled when His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew came to my Congressional District to officiate at Saints Constantine & Helen Church of Annapolis, Md. His All Holiness has inspired millions of people throughout the world to care for our natural environment. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is the first religious leader of global significance to take up the cause of the environment, by calling upon people of faith to accept that “ecological matters are spiritual concerns and that it is a sin to degrade the natural environment.” In honor of His All Holiness’ global environmental efforts, and his visit to a community that is itself a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, the No Child Left Inside Coalition asked me to present to His All Holiness a certificate recognizing him for his outstanding efforts at promoting the cause of the environment. The good deeds of His All Holiness, the good efforts of people like my Yiayia and Papou, as well as everyday Greek Americans who care about the environment and the communities they live in, is a demonstration that the virtues of Hellenism live on within each of us. I am convinced that, regardless of where their journey takes them, all Greek-Americans carry within them something planted by their parents, or grandparents, that compels a personal commitment to the values of Hellenism. It is this commitment to excellence and tradition that Greek Americans can draw upon to inspire the wider American society to promote just and worthy causes like environmental stewardship. I submit that, at least in part, we can answer who we are, how did we get here, and where do we go from here, by acknowledging that we are a pioneering community that cares for humankind and for our natural environment. Standing up for what is right is how and why AHEPA was founded. Remaining progressive and committed to the ideals of Hellenism is how AHEPA has flourished. I believe the brotherhood of AHEPA should accept a purpose driven commitment to the environment so that we can harness the imagination, energy and entrepreneurship of the next generation of Greek Americans whose dedication to their ethnic and cultural heritage remains strong. www.ahepa.org Fall 2009 the ahepan 1
