Athletics Aegean Chapter 506 Captures National Bowling Title By Spiro Siaggas, National Athletic Director Olympia Lanes, Hammond, Ind., was the site of the 49th Annual National AHEPA Bowling Tournament. AHEPA Hammond Chapter 123 hosted the event which featured 16 teams comprised of 80 Ahepans from across the country. All were competing to capture the championship trophy held by Hammond Chapter 123. Hammond Chapter 123 would not be successful in defending its crown, however. Rising to the top with a first-place finish was Aegean Chapter 506, Sterling Heights, Mich., scoring a total team pin fall plus handicap of 3,502. Bowlers Steve Melistas (733), Sam Floros (688), John Doumas (788), Tom Singos (687), and Jim Mitsopoulos (606) combined to give Aegean Chapter the national title. Garfield Chapter 203 finished second place with a total team score of 3,394. The team from Shoreline Chapter 380 came in third with a total team score of 3,369. Singles & Doubles Events On the first day of the tournament, 46 Ahepans competed in singles and doubles events. Top bowling honors went to Steve Melistas, Aegean Chapter 506, who tallied a total pin fall plus handicap of 754. Second place went to Rob Janson, Denver Chapter 145, who rung up a 749 series, and Jim Mitsopoulos, Aegean Chapter 506, captured third place with a tally of 732 The doubles team of Matt Tangarakis and Ron Greene, Denver Chapter 145, won the doubles competition with a total pin fall plus handicap of 1,456. Gary Wicklund and Bill Choporis, Garfield Chapter 203, paired-up to capture second place with a score of 1,414. Thirdplace honors went to Phil C. Karides and Phil P. Karides, Woodlawn Chapter 93, who tallied a 1,403 pin fall. Scratch/No Handicap Competition In a new category, Scratch/No Handicap, to include all events (singles, doubles, and team competition), Bill Choporis, Garfield Chapter 203, won with an actual pin fall of 2,037. Choporis’ tally included a scratch series of: 692 in singles, 702 in doubles, and 643 in team. In the “handicap division,” first place honors went to John Doumas, Aegean Chapter 506, who scored 2,209. Teammate Steve Melistas captured second place with a score of 2,168, and Matt Tsangarakis, Denver Chapter 145, took third place with a tally of 2,139. Phil P. Karides, Woodlawn Chapter 93, finished fourth with 2,092. Teams that vied for the national bowling crown included: Aegean Chapter 506, Denver Chapter 145 (two teams), St. Louis Chapter 53 (two teams), Merrillville, Ind. Chapter 78, Hammond Chapter 123 (two teams), Garfield Chapter 203 (four teams), Woodlawn Chapter 93 (two teams), Shoreline Chapter 380, and Northshore Chapter 94. Garfield Chapter 203 will host next year’s bowling championship tournament. The 19th Hole…A Round-up of AHEPA Golf Tournaments 2009 continues to be yet another active year for AHEPA’s golf program. First Low Net: George Theodore, Cleveland AHEPA Seniors Flite (75 & Older) First Low Gross: Tommy Sioukas, New York City First Low Net: John Psomas, Columbia, S.C. Mile High Regional Golf Tournament Broken Tee Golf Course hosted the Mile High Regional Tournament on July 29, 2009.
