Historic Liturgy at Panagea Sumela Captured on Film An Exclusive Photo Essay to The Ahepan Photography by Eleftherios Kostans F 20 or the first time since 1922, the Divine Liturgy for the Feast of the Dormition of Theotokos at the ancient monastery of Panagea Sumela, which is located on the side of a Turkish mountain in Trapezounda, was held Sunday, August 15, 2010. His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, the spiritual leader of the world’s 300 million Orthodox Christians, conducted the liturgy. Close to 3,000 pilgrims, mostly from Greece and Russia, were in attendance along with representatives of the parliaments of those two countries. The Metropolitans of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Turkish authorities were also present. Included in the Patriarch’s message that day was the inclusion of all faiths, including Islam. Visitors who could not fit into the crowded monastery watched on a giant television screen several hundred meters below the building. However, Ahepan Eleftherios Kostans, Chapter 515, a professional photographer, captured amazing images from the historical event and has shared them exclusively with The Ahepan. the ahepan Fall 2010
