sons anD maiDs messages Legislative Changes will Spark Membership Growth By Sons of Pericles Supreme President Spiro Nicolopoulos It is truly an honor to address you as the newly elected Supreme President of the Sons of Pericles. I would like to congratulate all of the outgoing presidents of the AHEPA family for a job well done. Additionally, I would like to congratulate Brother Karacostas for his re-election as AHEPA Supreme President and Sisters Christine Constantine and Kiki Amanatidis for their elections as the Daughters of Penelope and Maids of Athena Grand Presidents, respectively. I look forward to working with them and their Lodges to have another successful year for the AHEPA family. In early 2011, the Sons of Pericles will begin its 85th year as an organization. To continue the hard work of our members over the past 84 years, we have an amazing team of young men on the Supreme Lodge that are looking forward to making this year our best one yet. We are looking to build on the membership growth our Order has experienced over the past year under the leadership of Past Supreme President Dean Tselepis and with the supervision of our National Advisor, Brother Chris Economides, Jr. (“Mr. E.”). The most important way that we will see growth this year will be from the legislative changes that AHEPA made at the Supreme Convention. The changes allow for SOP members between the ages of 14-17 to be exempt from dues and SOP members age 18 and older to be allowed as automatic members of AHEPA, giving them the status of dual membership in the Sons of Pericles and AHEPA. Another way in which we will grow our Spiro Nicolopoulos membership is by hosting four regional basketball tournaments with a championship tournament to be played at the 2011 Supreme Convention in Miami. Our new Membership Rewards point system is a third way we plan to maintain and build membership. SOP Chapters can earn points through a variety of ways; one of which includes bringing in new members. A running tally of everyone’s points will be kept up to date on the SOP website at this location: To be kept up to date on the news and activities of the Sons of Pericles, please subscribe to our monthly electronic newsletter via the homepage of our website ( The newsletter gives our members the opportunity to submit articles on the accomplishments of their chapters throughout the year. Maids of Athena Prepares to Celebrate 80 Years of Service By Maids of Athena Grand President Kiki Amanatidis It is a great honor to serve as the Grand President of the Maids of Athena during a milestone year for our Order. This year, the Maids of Athena celebrates 80 years of Sisterhood, and we hope that our work makes our founding Sisters proud. This year’s Grand Lodge brings together Sisters from all over North America: Grand Vice President Marianthe Kolokithas (Charleston, S.C.), Grand Secretary Diane Simeon (Potomac, Md.), Grand Treasurer Angela Armstrong (Chandler, Ariz.), Grand Governor Constantina Yannitsos (Calgary, Alberta), National Maids of Athena Advisor Demi Thomas (Ridgewood, N.Y.), and I am from Scottsdale, Ariz. Our theme for the year is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Celebrating 80 Years of the Maids of Athena. It is our aspiration to incorporate the visions of our predecessors as we move forward with projects and ideas for today that will hopefully inspire the Sisters of tomorrow. We had a great turnout in Montreal with many delegates attending meetings and events. The momentum continued for us straight into Governors’ Conference. In Montreal, we voted for St. Basil Academy to be our National Project. We have already started raising awareness by having a “School Supply Gift Card Drive” at Governors’ Conference. In addition to the gift card drive, we plan to Kiki Amanatidis have a 50/50 raffle. One of the projects we were proud of last year was Flat Athena. This year, Flat Athena will commence her second year on the road where she will be visiting Sisters from all over the United States and Canada. She had plenty of time relaxing poolside after the convention so she is well rested and ready to go! As for me, I look forward to meeting all of you throughout the year. Please know that you can always reach me by e-mail ( with any questions you may have about the Maids of Athena. 6 the ahepan Fall 2010
