District 1

Palmetto Chapter 284, Columbia, S.C.—The chapter observed AHEPA Sunday by remembering departed brethren during a Memorial Service held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. It also had an “AHEPA Membership & Information” display table at coffee hour that presented information on the chapter’s four AHEPA Apartment complexes, recent chapter initiatives, membership applications, and the AHEPA video “Ripples Never Cease.”

District 3
AHEPA Chapter 31, Washington, D.C.—On Sat,, May 28, 2011, 60 Ahepans from the Mid-Atlantic Region, led by AHEPA Chapter 31 gathered to memorialize those identified as Greek Americans or Greek Orthodox who are buried at Arlington National Cemetery. According to organizers, there are roughly 660 gravesites at which Ahepans present a wreath of artificial flowers and pause in remembrance of those who perished for our nation. This ceremony, coordinated by Past Chapter 31 President Vasilis Skardis and Past AHEPA Executive Director and retired Navy Captain Demosthenes Kolaras, has been performed annually since 1949. Many past and present AHEPA family officers attended including: Supreme Treasurer Col. Nicholas P. Vamvakias (ret.), Past Board of Directors Member C. Steven Georgilakis, Past Supreme Presidents of the Sons of Pericles Chris Chiames and Basil Mossaidis, District 3 Governor Demetri Govotsios, Past District 3 Governor Steve Mavronis as well as chapter officers and members from many AHEPA chapters, including Col. Peter N. Derzis Chapter 438, Arlington, Va. Daughters of Penelope Executive Director Elena Saviolakis also participated. A reception on the AHEPA Headquarters rooftop followed.

Pinellas Chapter 356, Clearwater, Fla.— Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard presented an AHEPA Day Proclamation to Pinellas Chapter 356 President Gus Pantelides in appreciation of AHEPA’s contributions to the Clearwater community. AHEPA Family, Clearwater, Fla.—On Sunday, May 22, 2011, the AHEPA Family of Clearwater held its annual Scholarship and Awards ceremony at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
