Excursion Donation to Feed Greece’s Hungry, Meetings with Nations’ Presidents Highlight Excursion T he 84th Annual AHEPA Excursion led by Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides followed in the footsteps of previous trailblazing excursions with an ambitious two-week itinerary that brought the 14-member AHEPA family delegation in contact with high-ranking government officials and religious and business leaders from four countries. The excursion began with a six-day visit to Greece, April 1-6, 2012. The delegation spent five days in Athens and embarked on a daytrip to Thessaloniki on April 5. During the Athens leg, the focus of many meetings was on how the Greek Diaspora can help provide humanitarian aid to the people of Greece as a result of Greece’s financial crisis. The AHEPA Family delegation met with Prime Minister Lucas Papademos, April 3, and President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias, April 4, as well as with leaders of Greece’s political parties during those two days. In addition, the delegation received a briefing on U.S.-Greece relations from American Ambassador to Greece Daniel B. Smith at the ambassador’s residence, and it visited the Embassy of Canada, on April 2. “We have been extremely well-received in Athens,” said Supreme President Dr. Grossomanides. “We are grateful to all parties that helped to make this leg of our excursion a fruitful and productive one. We look forward to continuing our work together to further enhance and strengthen relations between the United States, Canada, and Greece.” He added, “We also discussed our program to help address Greece’s humanitarian crisis and provided the government officials with an update on where we stand with it.” The AHEPA family made an initial $7,500 donation toward Apostoli Mission, a food bank charity under the direction of the Church of Greece on April 6. The donation will provide 400 food kits to families in need. Each food kit feeds a family of four for about 15 days.
