SOP Teams with MOA Again to Raise Funds for National Project
By Michael Michalopulos
After a successful year of joint fundraising for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), in which $9,000 was raised, the Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena came to a certain conclusion: it can only benefit our two organizations if we continue that trend for 2012-2013. That’s right. The Sons and Maids are teaming up again for this year’s National Project. We fully expect to surpass our accomplishments from years past. After a very moving proposal by the Maids (during the Sons general meeting in Las Vegas), and by overwhelming vote from the Sons Delegates, the Sons decided to choose FARA (Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance). FARA is a “national organization dedicated to curing Friedreich’s ataxaia (FA) through research, pharmaceutical/biotech drug development, clinical trials, and scientific conferences. FARA also serves as a catalyst, between the public and scientific community, to create worldwide exchanges of information that drive medical advances (http://www.curefa.org/about.html).” Moving forward, the two committee chairs from the Sons and Maids National Lodges have been active in conversation and setting the foundation for some great fundraising events. As in past years, we will be continuing the tradition of distributing and selling raffle tickets. This has always been a fantastic way to involve the chapters on a grass roots level and ultimately encourage them to engage their local Greek communities.

On a national level, we plan on mixing it up this year. It’s our hopes and intentions to create a “fun casino” night and latch it onto the regional basketball tournaments that the Sons organize around the country. Other than national conventions, our regional tournaments have by far the greatest participation of members. We are looking to involve the players as well as AHEPA family members from each of the greater areas. At the fun casino, you’ll be able to trade in real money for play money
and use that money on real casino games where they can compete and win. At the end of the night, you’ll be able to exchange the play money for a broad range of prizes (from fun to luxury). Food and drinks will also be available. All proceeds will benefit FARA. Our minimum goal this year is to raise $25,000. We have some audacious goals, but we are confident in our abilities and we’re looking forward to making this a great year.
