ON THE ECONOMY, THE MARKETS, AND YOUR BUSINESS

The US Financial Outlook: A Half-Speed Recovery
Friday, November 19  1:00 pm – 1:50 pm The US recovery has begun, but the deepest and longest recession in postwar history is likely to be followed by the David slowest economic expansion. The consumer has led Wyss recent expansions, but record high debt and record low saving rates make it difficult for consumer spending to rise more rapidly than incomes. Weakness in other industrial economies will keep exports sluggish. Government has been the main engine of growth over the past year, but stimulus is being phased out, especially after the example of the Greek debt crisis. David Wyss, chief economist, Standard & Poor’s, expects the recovery to remain slow and fragile, with growth barely reaching trend and the unemployment rate remaining high for several years. The weak growth increases the odds of a “double-dip” recession, since it keeps the economy vulnerable to financial or energy shocks.

Jobs, Economic Growth, and Prosperity: Getting America Moving in the Right Direction
Friday, November 19  2:00 pm – 3:00 pm As Washington looks to fix the struggling economy with more money for more government, more power for politicians, more debt, and more bureaucracy, Newt Gingrich, former speaker, US House of Representatives, knows that America can do better. One of America’s most respected thoughtleaders, he will lay out a clear and decisive alternative to Washington’s economic recovery plans. Mr. Gingrich will remind us that small business is the engine that runs the economy and that government action like creating a payroll tax credit, reducing the business tax rate, and developing American energy will help jump-start the economy. He will strike an optimistic tone in showing how America has come through economic downturns before and how rewarding work, savings, and retirement will get us through the current recession.

MANAGING ASSETS IN A NEW ERA
What’s Ahead for Fixed-Income? Understanding New and Esoteric ETFs
Friday, November 19  9:30 am – 10:45 am The economy continues to grow, albeit slowly, and most believe that it will remain in positive territory as the fragile recovery slowly takes hold. Volatility and anxiety runs high, however, fueled by sovereign debt fears in Europe, geopolitical concerns in the two Koreas, as well the impact of the newly passed financial reform law. Several leading fixed-income experts will offer their insights and ideas about the risks and opportunities that lie ahead. Thursday, November 18  9:45 am – 11:00 am ETFs continue to redraw the investment landscape map and are democratizing investments that were previously only accessible to large institutional investors. With new products launching every week and the strategies and underlying assets becoming increasingly more complex, investors can find themselves a little overwhelmed with the options. This discussion will focus on how to evaluate a new fund with limited history and review how the more esoteric offerings in the marketplace can fit in a client’s portfolio.
