Morningstar's Mumbai-based team of analysts
is seeing a sea change. Indian investors
traditionally have allocated a large part of their
savings to physical assets such as gold
and real estate and a much smaller proportion to
financial assets. This trend is slowly but surely
changing, and mutual funds are among the largest
beneficiaries. The team's unbiased research
and ratings have helped fuel this new investor
behavior. "Domestic interest rates remain
high, and equity markets offer good long-term
returns," says Kaustubh Belapurkar, director
of fund research, "which has prompted Indian
investors to have a very large home bias.
We're here to help them make informed choices."
To get a sense of this evolving investing
environment, we decided to focus this issue's
Spotlight on India. The analysts pictured
above-all based in Mumbai-contributed the
articles. Their work starts on Page 34.

No one has illustrated more issues of the magazine
than Lloyd Miller. We often give the hardest
task to Miller-a former student of Morningstar
design consultant Philip Burton. After an
earlier illustrator failed to meet expectations late
in our publication schedule, we called Miller.
As usual, he stunningly delivered. "The peacock
in India represents prosperity," he says.
"That attribute suggested a way in which to visually
explore the themes of this particular issue-
and it's always nice when ideas can be
represented with an economy of means." Miller
is based in New York. His work has appeared
in many publications.
