FUND FLOWS SPOTLIGHT
Equity Investors Turn to Financial Sector Funds
Long-term mutual funds and exchange-traded
funds took in $4.8 billion in August 2022, breaking
their record streak of four consecutive months
of outflows.
Taxable-bond funds collected about $13 billion in
August, breaking a seven-month run of outflows.
U.S. equity funds, however, shed $6.2 billion,
with outflows from growth-oriented categories
outweighing inflows to value categories.
Sector-equity funds, however, had their strongest
showing since January 2022, gathering $3.2 billion
in August. The bulk of that went to financial
funds on the heels of hawkish commentary from the
Federal Reserve. Meanwhile, investor interest
in energy funds stalled in August. Technology
funds continued to see high outflows.
