When Gloria Guevara Manzo received an invitation to presidential palace Los Panos in January, she was surprised. When she learned her meeting with Mexico President Felipe Calderón would be one-onone, she was stunned. “My understanding was that they wanted to know my opinion on the travel industry, so I put together some talking points and ideas,” says Guevara, who at the time served as vice president and director for the Sabre Travel Network in Mexico. “When I went to Los Pinos, that’s when I learned it was not going to be a group of 20 people, it was by myself with the president—and I learned that exactly as I was walking into his office.” She was scheduled for a 20-minute briefing; the interview lasted nearly an hour and a half. “I told him, if you don’t mind I have some ideas I put together last night at 11 p.m.,” she recalls. “It was a very interesting session, because he was very open, very receptive.” In February, Guevara received a second invitation from the president. “After what I told him, I wasn’t sure why he wanted to see me again,” she says. “It was a nice conversation but also very candid, where I saw some areas of opportunity. He liked that I was open and asked questions.” President Calderón asked if she thought the country could market itself better, and she said yes. He asked her if she wanted to help her county, and she said yes, of course. Minutes later, she was accepting the role of tourism secretary for the nation. Two weeks after, she consented to take on the directorship of the Mexico Tourism Board as well.
