ADAM Audio Updates Popular Monitors ADAM Audio has updated its S-Series of powered reference monitors to the SX-Series. The new speakers offer a completely redesigned ribbon tweeter called the X-ART, which provides 4 dB higher efficiency over the previous design, 3 dB higher maximum SPL, and a frequency response out to 50 kHz. The new speakers feature a new Class A/B amplifier with extremely low distortion and very high bandwidth, and new Hexacone woofers with longer excursion. Six models are available— two lower-priced models and two upper-end models, each of the latter available in two completely different designs depending on whether they are to be mounted horizontally or vertically. The S1X and S2X combine the X-ART tweeter found in all the new models with a single woofer, 6" in the S1X and 7" in the S2X. The S3X-H (horizontal mount, pictured here) has a 4" midrange driver and two 7" woofers; the S3X-V (vertical mount) has a 4" midrange driver and a 9" woofer. At the top of the line, the S4XH (horizontal mount) has a 5" midrange driver and two 9" woofers, and the S4X-V (vertical mount) has two 5" drivers and a new 12" woofer. All models have front-panel controls for room adjustment, and all models but the S1X can be fitted with onboard 24-bit/192 kHz D/A converters with AES and S/PDIF inputs. It’s a step sequencer that’s designed for rapid input of notes and realtime alteration of melodies, basslines, chord progressions, and more. Controls allow the user to transpose sequences on the fly or change the hold times of notes, lock down important notes or chords to prevent transposition, add breaks and rolls, randomize your sequences, and much more. There’s even an internal synthesizer for auditioning and creating patterns on the go, and a built-in workaround to allow the AU version to generate MIDI within Apple Logic. Designed with dual mesh screens surrounding a central chamber with six vent ports, the Blast Pad is designed to stop even the worst of air plosives that can not only ruin takes but also prematurely age or even ruin ribbon mics, all while leaving the audio quality untouched. Machined from aluminum and stainless steel, the Blast Pad comes with a standard mic gooseneck mount and is intended not only for vocals but also for kick drums, horns, guitar amps, or any other sound source that moves a lot of air. PSPaudioware Ships New Compressor Plug-in PSP oldTimer is a vintage-style compressor plug-in from Polish software maker PSPaudioware. It’s designed to be simple to use while offering a highly musical sound. It’s not an emulation of any particular compressor, but rather a model of vintage circuit technologies that provides many of their characteristics, including a soft and smooth compression with a hint of tube color when driven hard. A fully functional 14-day demo is available from the company’s website. oldTimer is available for Windows XP/Vista in VST and RTAS, and for Mac OS X 10.4 or better in AU, VST, and RTAS.
