2C Audio Aether By Mike Metlay PLUG-IN OUTLET Aether is the first product from 2C Audio, an offshoot of wellknown soundware developer Galbanum. It’s an algorithmic reverb that offers a wide range of powerful tweaks, organized in a manner that’s intuitive and fun to work with. Let’s take a closer look. An algorithmic reverb, by the way, is one that uses high-speed math to calculate the early reflections, late reflections, eq settings, and other adjustable parameters that make up a reverb signal. Most digital reverbs work this way. The other kind of software reverb uses convolution, which bases its math on an impulse response—a sort of ‘sonic footprint’ of a room taken by firing a starter pistol or other loud noise in a room and measuring the reverberant sound with microphones. While convolution reverbs can be stunningly realistic, many users prefer algorithmic reverbs for their warm and beautiful, if not photorealistic, sound; an imperfect analogy would be comparing a very linear and accurate reference microphone to a vintage ribbon mic. Getting around While Aether does have multiple screens, most of them are for things like a program browser or version/serialnumber information; the actual programming is all contained in the Main View, shown in the screenshot. Aether’s interface can have different ‘skins’ or overall color/graphic schemes; the Berlin Skin, shown, is the basic design, and version 1.0.1 adds the Indigo Skin (discussed below). As explained in the detailed PDF manual, the Aether interface is organized so that you don’t get lost trying to figure out what a program is doing. In the Berlin Skin, the main controls for input and output levels and mixing are in the bottom center section and highlighted in orange; the early reflections controls are on the left and highlighted in green; and the late reflections controls are top center and right, highlighted in Delivery: Web download only blue. The one on the left is labeled Space; More from: 2C Audio, www.2caudio.com. it’s a pictorial representation of the general type of room being simulated in the reverb, 48 RECORDING OCTOBER 2009 from stadiums to cathedrals to canyons to tunnels to outside spaces to unusual effects like reverse reverb. When I first started using Aether, I dismissed the Shape display as a gimmick but I soon realized that I could click through the 33 different Space types and visually get in the ballpark of what I wanted with ease. While the Space is a set of parameters in and of itself, selecting a new Space can (if you wish) also alter some of the early and late reflections parameters too, so they’re complementary to the new Space. A Link button lets you defeat the Space’s control of these other parameters if you wish. The display on the right is called Freq, and shows you the frequency response of the eq currently in effect at various stages of the reverb creation. In the real world, the composition of a room’s surfaces and contents affects how high and low frequencies are absorbed or scattered, and Aether lets you simulate that with eq in several places. The four displayed curves reflect the current settings of the two eq stages (late reflections and output) and the two HF Soft controls, which let you roll off highs in the early and late reflections.
