BY MIKE M E T L AY AND FERNANDO CURIEL BOSS ME-70 Guitar Multiple Effects In the world of guitar effects, there’s a fertile middle ground between the world of stomp boxes and the realm of high-end all-in-one guitar effects systems. Stomp boxes are inexpensive and easy to chain together and tweak, but they require a lot of extra cabling, which can lead to noise problems, and there’s no easy way for the guitarist to set up multiple favorite tones and have them quickly recallable. All-inone systems are compact, programmable, and packed with features from built-in tuning to USB interfaces, but their displayand-menu programming systems can be offputting, they may be loaded with extra effects the guitarist doesn’t want, and the fanciest models can be quite costly. BOSS, with its decades of experience creating both kinds of guitar effects, has also demonstrated a keen eye for the needs of the guitarist who’d like a simple pedalboard that’s compact, programmable, laid out like a set of stomp boxes, offers a solid set of widely-usable effects with a few cool extras mixed in, and won’t break the bank. Let’s take a closer look at the ME-70.RECORDING NOVEMBER 2009 Layout Think of the ME-70 as a chain of four stomp boxes, with a set of extra non-stomp modules and an expression pedal mixed in, all neatly welded together into a light, portable metal chassis. The four stomps each have their own programming knobs and on/off switches, and each can select among a variety of effects subtypes. The rear panel has a Guitar Input (that acts as Power On, stompbox-style), Left/Mono and Right Guitar Amp outputs, a stereo Rec Out/Headphones jack, and a stereo Footswitch In, all 1/4". There’s a jack for an optional AC power supply, but the ME-70 doesn’t come with one; it runs on six AA batteries. Don’t let the large, thick paper manual frighten you; it’s in seven languages, and covers all the bases in 20 pages. Dr. Metlay tweaks The four stomp modules in the ME-70 are called Comp/FX, OD/DS, Modulation, and Delay. The Comp/FX module lets you select between a compressor, envelope filters, BOSS’s famous Slow Gear attack smoother, defretter, and three simple pickup-tone modelers (e.g. turning single coils into a humbucker or vice versa). The OD/DS module has ten selectable overdrives and distortions. The Modulation module offers the usual flanger, chorus, vibrato, and rotary speaker simulation, along with fun extras like a Univox Uni-Vibe simulator, octave doubler, and true volume tremolo—ten in all. The Delay module offers standard delays out to 6 seconds, reverse, tap-tempo, and a simple phrase loop recorder. The ME-70 also has a Preamp section that can select between six amp models, a 4-band eq, or bypass. There’s a built-in Noise Suppressor (NS) to control hum. And at the back end is BOSS’s easy-to-use singleknob Reverb, offering a Room and a Hall with controllable reverb time. The pedal does triple duty: it acts as a volume control, it can control stomp box parameters like delay time or modulation rate, or it controls its own dedicated Pedal FX like wah and realtime pitch shift. A toe switch under the pedal selects volume or effects control.
