mics in a room, input and output transducers are attached to a large sheet of metal. These reverbs are metallic and quick and slightly unnatural in an oh-sopleasant way. While the plate algorithm has been a staple of Lexicon’s lexicon for years, it was revised for the PCM96, from which this version is taken. Additionally, the Vintage Plate makes its debut in this collection, adding different eq responses as well as advanced multiple echoes for true vintage emulation, as many plate reverbs made use of a tape echo on the initial send for predelay. • Room – Also originally introduced in the PCM96, this is, according to Lexicon, one of their most innovative and unique verbs yet. While seemingly simple with just three edit pages, it actually takes liberty with the usual “room” idea and expands it to include any size of artificial, man-made space—like typical theatres, auditoriums or bedrooms, all the way down to a van interior, tin can, and cardboard box! Lexicon is quick to point out that these are still digital calculations and not convolutions or impulse responses. The sound While all of that is impressive by itself, at the end of the day, how a reverb sounds is all that truly matters. Well... I could be flippant and say, “It’s Lexicon, Duh!” because, well... “It’s Lexicon, Duh!” Beyond that, while the PCM Bundle is essentially a PCM96 in your computer, the PCM96 was and is a new beast for Lexicon. While it retains the smooth, lusciously imposing reverberant blanket Lexicon was built on, it also sidles its way slightly into more realistic and natural reverb territory typically dominated by the likes of TC Electronic’s VSS3 and VSS4 algorithms. So now you also have the option for slightly more transparent and non-imposing ambiences, and even small crisp and trashy spaces, which are phrases not typically associated with the Lexicon sound. Performance The next major consideration in a plugin reverb, after sound, is performance, and since almost all of the highest-quality, nonconvolution reverbs currently require DSP cards or FireWire boxes, going native is a maverick move on Lexicon’s behalf. So how many verbs can one get in a mix? On my quad-core 2.8 GHz Windows XP machine with 4 GB of RAM in Steinberg Cubase 5, I got 13, many with mammoth 80 second-plus tails before my CPU started to sputter and weep. For an average mix with even 4–5 active reverbs, the CPU load was less than a fourth of my system’s power. If you truly feel the need to run more than 5 reverbs at a time, I would seriously consider rehab or a support group.
Hardware—software Another big question, software versus hardware? Hardware’s biggest claims are that it is historically more future-proof than software; when you boot it up, more than 99.9% of the time it works, and it is much easier to run external live signals through it. Software’s biggest claims are, you get multiple instances and choices of reverb and every parameter can be fully automated, stored with your session and fully recalled. In reality neither is better or worse, rather it comes down to which choice fits your workflow better. I would be lying if I said that I do not go back and forth on this very issue, although I’m currently leaning heavily on the software for the above-mentioned advantages. “But everyone knows...” “...that the software is never as good as the hardware!” Right? If you still doubt that a reverb plug-in can sonically deliver convincing reverbs that rival the similar hardware, then you are in for huge surprise. It does in almost every way. Remember this is not an emulation of the hardware; it is the same code in different clothing. Unlike analog emulations, the only real differences that can creep in here is the sound that is added when you go out of a hardware box’s D/A converters into a mixer and/or your interface’s A/D converters. That’s a valid difference for some, but not the same as the difference between an esoteric piece of vintage analog gear and its plug-in cousin. So you have great sound, great performance, and some of the deepest level of editing Lexicon has ever offered. The last sobering topic to cover is price. The PCM Native Bundle is $1500 street. While this is a lot, by comparison a PCM96 is $3000 street and while the newer PCM92 is only $1800, you still only get one reverb at a time. Comparing plug-ins to plug-ins, it’s actually fairly in line with purchasing all three TC reverb algorithms (reviewed January 2008) and a necessary PowerCore DSP engine; if you add up all of Universal Audio’s various excellent reverbs and the price of a UAD-2 DSP card, or consider any of Waves’ multiple plug-in bundles, the Lexicon actually compares favorably. Conclusion Bottom line, this is the native reverb I have been waiting for. I will leave you with one final thought, stolen and adapted from an outtake from Pulp Fiction: “There are two types of reverb people in this world, Lexicon guys and the other guys; now the other guys can like Lexicon reverbs and Lexicon guys can like some of the others, but you never like them both the same. Me, I’m a Lexicon guy.”
