I had a heck of a lot of fun just with the choices in AmpKit+ as purchased. Of the four amps in the app, my favorites were the ValveKing provided in the free version and the Classic Brit (a VOX model). The mic models offer an on/off-axis switch, which provides a dramatic change in the output tone and effectively doubles your available sound choices. The effects were surprisingly flexible and easy to use, and I got a wide variety of clean and dirty sounds very quickly. I also enjoyed the app’s many extras, like its built-in tuner and metronome with selectable sounds, preloaded backing loop tracks for jamming, iTunes song import, and a little recorder that lets you capture audio in AmpKit and then export it to compatible apps using Sonoma Wire Works’ rapidlyproliferating Audio Copy/Paste function. In all my trials with AmpKit, I only crashed the app once, when I tried to delete a test Setup that had over twenty effects in its signal chain. That definitely qualifies as a “don’t do this” situation, as the crash wiped out not only the Setup I was working on but all of my other saved Setups as well. In use, the only real issue I noticed was one of feedback when using very high-gain amp models. In extreme cases, the feedback was so obtrusive that I couldn’t use the Setup, but usually I was able to juggle levels and gain settings to tame the feedback without destroying my tone. I think AmpKit’s real strong suit is its clean tones, and I think the sounds you’ll get make it a strong contender for Best All-Around Guitar App out there right now. Try the free version, but be prepared to shell out for AmpKit+ pretty quickly; the amp and miking choices are great, but you’ll miss the effects.

hardware interface that matched up with AmpKit for a complete recording solution. The AmpKit LiNK uses the iOS device’s built-in headset connections to provide input for a guitar and output for headphones. It’s a little white box with a non-detachable 12" cable that ends in a 1/8" TRRS plug. That’s right, TRRS... Tip-Ring-RingSleeve, a connector that provides one channel of input and two channels of output. Originally intended for a mic and earphones, the iPad’s TRRS jack is pressed into service for audio I/O with many apps. It’s not a simple adapter cable; there’s a built-in circuit to help control crosstalk and lower feedback, powered by two AAA batteries. It’s easy to use; just plug in your headphones (1/8") and guitar (1/4"), plug the AmpKit LiNK into your iOS device, and it should be sensed by your audio app and have you immediately ready to roll. In use, I found the AmpKit LiNK to have a good-quality sound both on the guitar input and the headphone outs, although feedback could be a problem when using highgain amp models and the like. The only way to completely solve the feedback problem is to use an audio interface that attaches to the dock connector, like the Sonoma Wire Works GuitarJack or the forthcoming Alesis iO Dock. But those solutions are five times as expensive as the AmpKit LiNK and are definitely not for every user. As an economical and good-quality audio I/O box for guitar and iOS, the AmpKit LiNK is a solid solution for your toolbox.

Plus, and got great results. This little app is a very cool introduction to Studio Devil’s marvelous amp models, and gets points for simplicity and cool factor. What’s not to like about having a luscious modeled amp stack in your iPhone or iPad?

You can recall or create simple rhythms called Grooves, and combine two of them to make a Song, which can repeat up to 40 times or loop indefinitely. But in this issue we’re listening to the Guitar Amp app, a simpleto-use amp modeler for iOS. In this little app, the focus is on sound alone, not on fancy extras. You get a choice of three amps, three cabinet models, and four tone controls—Gain, Level, Bass, and Treble. That’s about as basic as it gets, but the breadth of tones available is pretty impressive. The three amp models are indicated by a colored indicator, green for a classic clean sound, yellow for British Crunch, and red for Modern Lead. The three cabinets are a practice amp, a large combo amp, or a 4x12 half stack. Mixing and matching gives you everything from an exceptionally pristine and jazzy tone to full-on face-melting shred.
