Michael C. Ross Records In Turkey
With a body of work as successful and diversified as that of Michael C. Ross (for his résumé see www.studioexpresso.com/profiles/MichaelCRoss.htm), word gets around, so it’s no wonder he gets called upon to work with artists in faraway places. Turkish superstar Teoman has kept Michael busy recently, and we wanted to know what that was like. Who is Teoman and what did you do for him? Michael C. Ross: Teoman has been a household name in Turkey for maybe twenty years, he’s considered a rock star. I did FOH sound on 30 or so live gigs while my assistant Serkan Kargaci recorded the performances, then I mixed them, back in Istanbul. They have yet to be released. Also in Istanbul I recorded a number of tracks for Teoman’s latest album that came out in May of this year, called Ask & Gurur, which means Love and Pride. We did that at a fairly new studio called Babajim. What’s the recording scene like in Istanbul? There’s quite a bit going on. Babajim is the only studio I know that has proper iso booths, it was built a couple of years ago by English designer Roger D’Arcy in an office building. It has an unusual layout with a control room above the recording spaces; you can see pictures at www.babajim.com and at www.aaa-design.com. How did the sessions go? I had an assistant named Zeynep Tunay who is very good and speaks good English, and I made sure long beforehand that everything was ready the way I needed it. The studio has good gear, a Neve console and such, but the guitarists aren’t in the habit of using amps for some reason, so I had them rent a Marshall, and some other things I needed. Overall the sessions went very smoothly.
when it’s all said and done, I am doing what I enjoy most and have only myself to answer to if I don’t like the way things are going. That’s a lot of responsibility, but I’m glad to have it. Most of our readers are, by definition, recording musicians—what advice can you offer to those who, not unlike you, want to branch out, and divide their time among diverse but related activities centered on their studio? All of this work and dedication must carry the artistic expression as its motivation. The self-expression of the art and artist must be the driving force behind everything you do. If you are chasing trends or money, while you may be successful, you may not feel the satisfaction of actually having achieved something on an artistic level; this can leave you unsatisfied, wanting on deeper levels. The pursuit of an artist must stand at the core of all your decisions; don’t compromise your goals, find ways to achieve them, and your art will speak to the audience that receives it. After all, whether we are musicians, dancers, painters, actors or engineers, we are all artists doing all we can to express ourselves in a way that reaches and or touches our audiences. This is the expression of the human experience that is beyond language. You know when you have heard or seen something that moves you. Keep this in your sights at all times. Work hard, play fair and be kind... oh yes, and know what you want.
Did you record Teoman’s road band? No, for the most part, Teoman’s people hired session musicians, and they mostly worked off demos they received before the sessions, they all learned and nailed their parts. A person they call the “arranger”, someone we might call the producer, by the name of Emirhan, was hired to call the shots and run the sessions, but I don’t think he brought written charts. We recorded basics for maybe eight songs in three days, just electric guitar, electric bass, and drums. How were they placed? The drummer was in the big recording space with the double-high ceiling. The bassist had his amp in the nearest iso room but stood out in the main area next to the drummer. The guitarist was in one of the two other iso rooms, and Teoman sang scratch vocals in the third iso room. They all could see one another. What about overdubs? Most of them were done in another location, in an office a couple of miles away. I had to modify the room to make it work, and set it up so that Emirhan could work the knobs and faders for part of the time while I had to be back in LA. They worked at night a lot, for noise reasons. Some guitar tracks were done there, too, and on a couple of occasions we went back to Babajim’s. How did the live gigs go on tour? Teoman is hugely popular and plays sizable venues. There’s a monitor mixer with his board, I worked the FOH board, a Midas Heritage, and from its direct outs my
