Toontrack Releases Free Update to Superior Drummer
Superior Drummer 2.3 is the latest version of Toontrack’s popular virtual drum instrument. With a wide selection of drum sounds and patterns recorded at New York’s Avatar Studios, Superior Drummer 2.0 offers multiple drum miking options, selectable amounts of mic bleed for each mic, the ability to mix and match drum sounds from other Toontrack sound libraries, and a sophisticated Groove Browser that lets users audition and import MIDI grooves easily, isolating particular instruments if desired. The new version adds Multiple Hits Emulation, where the software intelligently blends in stick attacks on multiple hits to the same cymbal so as to create convincing cymbal washes and crescendos. Also new in version 2.3 is the ability to use MIDI noteoff or aftertouch data to create cymbal chokes and mutes on the fly, for quicker yet more realistic-sounding part creation. Yamaha DTXdrums Offer Studio Recording Solutions
Yamaha is offering a new lineup of DTXdrums electronic drum kits, designed to combine natural playing feel with exceptional sounds and a mic-free recording capability for small or acoustically imperfect studios. Many of the new kits offer the DTX-PAD, a new textured cellular silicone head design for exceptional playing comfort and nuance. The new DTX500 Drum Trigger Module has 427 onboard sounds, 50 preset drum kits, and 20 user-editable kits, onboard practice tools, playalong and recording functions, MIDI Out, and 12 trigger inputs. Various kits are available—the DTX520K shown at left has a DTX-PAD snare, a three-zone crash cymbal, and six other drum and cymbal/hi-hat triggers. The DTX700 Drum Trigger Module has 1268 sounds, onboard DSP effects, and 128 melodic/keyboard sounds from Yamaha’s MOTIF-XF synth workstation, plus the ability to import sounds into its 64 MB of Flash ROM and a USB port for computer integration with Steinberg Cubase AI. The DTX750K, shown at right, is the middle of the lineup, and has four DTX-PADs for snare and toms, two crashes, a larger ride, hi-hat, and kick trigger, with conventional drum hardware; the top-of-the-line DTX790K kit offers larger DTX-PADs with control knobs for immediate tone adjustment right from the pad.
