More on Mid-Side I have enjoyed Recording Magazine for several years. I really appreciated your recent article on MidSide recording (November 2011), and I wanted to tell you about a neat twist on the method that I enjoy. I use a Zoom H4n recorder for capturing nature sounds and live recording. The H4n has XY microphones and two built-in preamps for external microphones. I have been using a pair of small condensers as external microphones for 4-channel recording. I thought that if a Side microphone could add room ambience to a direct recording, why not try adding a side microphone to the XY? I tried recording my wife Sherrilyn playing her Celtic harp and was amazed at the large soundfield added by the Side channel. I posted setup pictures, instructions and MP3 copies of the tracks on my website so others could try out mixing the XY and Side tracks for themselves. I added a synth backing track for fun as well. I am looking forward to trying Mid-Side and my XY / Side recording method for nature recording, as XY / Side gives me a channel free for a shotgun microphone. Scott Dorsey replies: Dear Jeanmarie: I don’t think the market is huge, but it’s not any smaller than it was five years ago and it’s maybe a little bit larger. Indie bands are having fun pressing singles and some major-label artists are including vinyl pressings as part of “deluxe packages” of their releases. I’m not making big money cutting lacquers myself, but I do a few now and then and it’s a fun sideline. If you’re in Brooklyn, you’re in luck, as there are still a number of vinyl mastering places in the New York area. If you’re really curious, you should go to Brooklyn Phono on 42nd St. and ask for a tour! They do very good cutting and pressing work, and they are probably the nearest place to you. Also, Salt Mastering on Greenpoint Ave. does very good lacquer cutting work. Because vinyl is such a small specialty market these days, the guys who do it really are dedicated people who love to talk about it. Ask nicely and you could get a great education on the topic from someone who really knows it.—SD Don’t do it yourself because you can’t I enjoyed Mike Metlay’s review of the Apple MacBook Air (March 2012), but I was wondering... He talks about how you can’t swap the hard disk, but what about the battery? I always wondered about the mastering process for making LPs, and it was very well written. I am curious about how many places are left that actually cut vinyl? Is there a market for it?

Harry, there’s a simple answer: No MacBook Air has a user-replaceable battery. It has to be done by a qualified Apple Service Center. If you’re the sort of person who likes doing stuff like this himself, such a limitation will make you grind your teeth; we had come so far from the original Macs of the 1980s that required special tools to disassemble, and we seem to be heading right back there again. But the economics of manufacturing seem to be pointing in that direction for many other things besides Macs—remember when you had seven different dashboard indicators so you had an idea of what to fix under the hood of your car, rather than a Check Engine light that required a trip to the repair shop? It’s just cheaper, and some would say more reliable, to design boxes that aren’t meant to be serviced by the end user. Fortunately the MacBook Pro still allows batteries, hard drives, and RAM to be user-upgraded, so if this really bothers you, that’d be the way to go. And you get to keep your FireWire port, too!—MM Addition/Correction In our April 2012 issue we reviewed the Alclair Reference In-Ear Monitors and referred to that model as a 3-way system with tweeter, midrange, and woofer. Alclair informed us that they are correcting that misstatement on the company’s website; the Reference is actually a 3-driver 2-way system, with one tweeter and dual woofers. Alclair also passed along some tech specs that weren’t made available before we went to press: the in-ears have a 27-ohm impedance at 1 kHz and 105 dB SPL sensitivity at 100 millivolts.—MM
