Simplifying a somewhat complex problem, sync was always determined by the slate at the top of each take. Every camera, having been set to time-of-day timecode, had its own specific timecode relationship to that slate. We chose David’s camera as the benchmark and computed an offset for each camera, relative to David’s. I created a master spreadsheet for each tune, showing all of the camera timecodes for each edit in the composited audio... This subject could be a whole article on its own! It was simple to get the XDCAM and XF300 clips into Final Cut Pro. After the tapecamera shots were imported directly from the camera, using Log and Capture, they too were easily managed QuickTime files. I converted the clips I would be using from all the cameras to Apple ProRes 422 and also set my sequence to that compression. Previous to this I had only edited what I shot in my XDCAM, so learning how to use Compressor was a challenge. The time it saves in manipulating clips and rendering later is invaluable. I set my Sequence to Unlimited RT, Medium Playback Video Quality, and Half Playback Frame Rate. I used the offset timecode calculations for each source and began laying in one camera at a time. Since you can hear out-of-sync sound even if you’re off by only one frame, I checked sync by monitoring camera audio simultaneously with the composite mixdown, to double-check Bruce’s math. To our surprise, I discovered that combining different types and formats of cameras and throwing Pro Tools into the mix, there actually was occasionally a small amount of drift! Only after getting sync on all five cameras in five layers did the fun part begin. I slowly went through the performances trying to reveal the video as driven by the musical performance. I squeezed every usable frame out of every take I could, but here’s where the limitations of guerrilla recording took their toll. The combination of composited audio with too few cameras and no director sometimes resulted in not all cameras always being perfectly trained on their subject at the precise moment they should have been. I had to be creative in editing. Once video edits were finalized, working with a QuickTime video within Pro Tools, I mixed, optimizing the mix to the picture. When I finished, I uploaded my stereo mix to David Glasser at Airshow Mastering in Boulder, CO. He mastered, I checked the mastering, then gave David Cilberti the link to the mastered file. I laid in the mastered audio, rendered the Sequence in full RGB, then exported a QuickTime movie in full 1920 x 1080 Apple ProRes 422. I then sized it to 1280 x 720 using QuickTime and got the AAC, H.264 file in a very manageable size, which is what you see on YouTube and the Bruce Kaphan Quartet web site.
