quit Universal Control, hook up one interface to your computer, daisy-chain it to the next interface, and then restart Universal Control. If you’ve done things properly, you’ll see both devices in the Launch Window of the Universal Control app (Figure 1). Now you can click on either device and launch its virtual front panel in Universal Control, make settings, save configurations, and so on. One disadvantage of this setup is that the interfaces are arranged in a set order that you can’t change, which can be problematic. Fortunately, once we’re inside our DAW, we can work around this, as explained below. Also note that in the case of the StudioLive, the FIG. 3 extra I/O from the FS Mobile doesn’t magically appear as part of the mixer’s layout; it’s seen by the computer, not by the other interface, so it’s not like you’ve added a sidecar to your console for use without the computer attached. Figure 2 shows how the two interfaces are seen in Apple’s Audio MIDI Setup. Stream 1 is the FS Mobile, and Stream 2 is the StudioLive; they add up to form a single FireWire device with 26 inputs and 22 outputs as far as the Mac is concerned. When we open our DAW (in this case, PreSonus Studio One, but any DAW will work), the cascaded interfaces are seen as a single device, with inputs and outputs ordered according to the interfaces’ priority shown in Figure 1. As you can see in the Audio I/O popup in Figure 3, that’s a bit of a pain for my rig when assigning inputs, because instead of the StudioLive coming first and the FS Mobile being tacked on at the end for extra inputs, it’s the other way around and the FS Mobile’s inputs get listed first, including the S/PDIF inputs that I don’t normally use. But this is easily fixed; just create a new mix template in whatever manner your DAW requires, and within that template reorder and rename the input channels to whatever you wish. Save the resulting empty mix, use it as a starting point when cascading your interfaces, and you’re good to go. Cascading works flawlessly and takes almost no time at all to set up; if you’re chafing at the limitations of your current setup, PreSonus makes it easy and affordable to expand your options this way.
