The Ears Have It Or do they? You’d think that everybody has their monitoring sorted, for tracking in the control room, for letting performers hear what they’re doing while they’re doing it, for mixing—especially for mixing! But, to our neverceasing amazement, we get too many entries to our venerable Readers’ Tapes column and web feature where folks don’t mention monitors on the equipment list they submit. If something is not right in their mix and no monitors are listed, is there a connection? We suspect so. Now if the percentage of monitor-delinquent Readers’ Tapes is that high, can we deduce that a similar percentage of the overall readership has similar problems? Maybe, maybe not. In any case, it never hurts to be educated about something as important as hearing what you’re doing. So we put monitors and monitoring front and center for this issue. Joe Albano parses out what types of playback systems there are and how best to use them in the studio. Eric Ferguson continues his Recording Fundamentals series, this month again addressing monitors, from mains to minis to the famous (notorious?) Yamaha NS-10M. Mike Rivers goes into useful detail on the topic of headphone amps—an often overlooked studio tool that comes with many intricacies; get the right one and you’re set, get the wrong one and Frustration becomes your middle name. We’re starting the year on a high note when it comes to sticker prices for some monitors, headphones, and a headphone amp we review. Not safe for impulse buyers, the Trident HG3 monitor cabinets, the Sennheiser HD800 headphones, and the Grace Design m903 headphone amp are luxury items when viewed from the vantage point of the regular recording musician. Mike Metlay prefaces his Sennheiser review with the words “The headphone equivalent of borrowing the keys to the Bugatti for the weekend”... And Mike doubles up in the de-luxe department with the AKG K702 65th Anniversary headphones. Alfa, or Lancia? Mercedes, or Porsche? But while we do like to look at next-step-up gear, we’re also looking after readers with smaller monitor budgets who still need quality audio. This month we also bring you two ADAM Audio monitors that are reasonably priced—featuring ADAM’s innovative folded ribbon where other cabinets have circular tweeters—with a sidebar on audio-friendly speaker stands from IsoAcoustics. Paul Vnuk Jr. highlights in-studio uses for items that you might think are only aimed at the stage—Shure’s SE215 sound-isolating in-ear monitors. This generous survey of monitors and headphones rounds out our yearround effort to inform you about these indispensable studio tools. We began 2012 with a review of the Neumann KH120 (KH as in Klein + Hummel, now owned by Sennheiser/Neumann), and followed with monitoring products from KRK, Sonodyne, Shure, Pelonis, Cerwin-Vega!, Radial Engineering, Alclair, AKG, CAD—and that’s just the last twelve months. Didn’t they fly by, these last twelve months? With the AES show barely behind us (check out our report in this issue, starting on page 10), we’re already ramping up for NAMM in January. Stay tuned. This nominal January issue reaches a great many readers well before the holidays in December, so allow me to first point last-minute gift buyers to our iOS Tools reviews on page 58, and then to repeat the sentiments we offered in the December issue last month: Happy Holidays, and may you reach your goals in the New Year! Happy Recording!
