Showtime
If you follow the bouncing ball, then Showtime can mean only one thing, and, yes,
it did take place in the Greater Los Angeles area; but, no, it wasn’t the L.A. Lakers’
Showtime that brought us there, it was NAMM Show time in Anaheim, Orange County,
California. Every year we must remind you with regret that you can’t gain access to the
show unless you have a way of securing the prized badge—the show is closed to the
general public. But plenty of folks do gain access, coming from all the world over.
This year’s show was busy, lively, noisier than ever (too many subwoofers all over
the place), and the demographics were stunning as usual—the colorful strutted their
colors while the business-minded minded their business. Never a dull moment!
The attendance was up, the mood was keen, and the weather, well, not so keen.
Our Mike Metlay and Paul Vnuk have burned the midnight oil to produce a show
report that will bring you up to date on all the new gear.
On occasions like NAMM one gets to say Hi to lots of folks, most of them musicians of one stripe or another—readers, authors, educators, company reps, old
friends from way back, passers-by and looky-loos, and what amazed me this year
was the multitude of stated goals in what they do. It goes something like this:
“What have you been up to?”
“I’ve just finished/I’m working on/...a project XYZ...”.
“What’s it for and how’s it going to be released?”
Well, that’s where the fun starts. Used to be that the answer was one of three: “A
cassette for sale at gigs (with Dolby B or C?)” or “a CD” or, occasionally and with
a sly grin, “we’re doing vinyl!”.
Now it’s more like a smörgåsbord: “A CD release/a game/a karaoke company/for the band’s website/for a TV pilot/a documentary/a cartoon/YouTube/CD
Baby/iTunes we hope/a music library/...”. And the release formats vary accordingly, from the lowliest MP3 to stratospheric bit-depth/sample-rate formats that few of
us can play back on our systems.
Delivery varies from USB thumb drive or data DVD to email attachment to Internet
upload to Fedexing a hard drive. And collaboration is key in more projects than ever,
as I pointed out in this space last month. Variety is the spice of life in audio these days.
Collaboration is just one of the tricks of the trade that Eric Alexandrakis singles out
this month in his article for those who are serious about wanting to make money from
their projects. It’s just one of many steps towards success—if you hold up your end
of the bargain in a collaboration, good things can come from it; if your collaborator
gets a gig where he needs help—you’re likely to get the call.
No matter what your goal is—as long as money comes into it, Eric has advice for
you. Getting music to pay for itself is what he does, through licensing and other such
avenues, and this month he follows on from last year when we first asked him to
describe how licensing can work.
In a similar vein, Gary Eskow shows in great detail how you can make Nimbit and
Facebook work for you to reach your audience—he is doing it and tells all about the
ins and outs.
Success all starts with a strong song, you knew that, but did you know how you
can learn to write that kind of song—a HIT song? Robin Frederick knows, she’s been
doing it for years, and she’s very specific in the advice she gives in answer to equally specific questions we put to her. The kind of practice she prescribes may not get
you to Carnegie Hall... but how about the Billboard 100, will that do?
