Toontrack EZmix Pack: Vocal Toolbox

In this Vocal issue, we’re presenting a variety of newly released and worthwhile
vocal tools for the home studio. Some of the programs in this issue offer a variety
of detailed tweaking options, while others are aimed at the beginner, or perhaps
the experienced recordist who’s on deadline and wants professional results in a
hurry, more oriented toward providing easy-to-use presets to do the job. In the latter category, we’d like to bring readers up to date on Vocal Toolbox, the latest
EZmix Pack for Toontrack’s EZmix plug-in.
What’s EZmix again?
For those of you who might not remember our review of
EZmix, now on version 2 (see our December 2011 and
October 2012 issues for the full story), here’s a quick
refresher course. EZmix is a multieffects plug-in that’s
designed with simplicity of use and musical results as the
primary focus. It is entirely preset-based; you can select
from hundreds of sounds based on a wide variety of
browser filters, in order to quickly find a processor chain
that matches your needs for a particular track, bus, or 2mix. For example, you could search the library for programs that include a de-esser, or for programs intended
for a drum bus, or for programs intended for use in
Country music... or any combination of the above.
Once you’ve chosen a preset, you’re given two basic controls, different for every preset, with names that are intended
to be intuitive, suggesting when and how to use them. Aside
from input and output levels, they’re the only knobs in the
whole plug-in, and each control may actually alter multiple
parameters on multiple effects at once. For example, turning
a control called “Space” might simultaneously change a
reverb’s wet/dry mix and room size while also tweaking the
delay feedback and the stereo enhancer intensity.
EZmix is designed so that workflow is quick and easy.
You can use another plug-in when you want to go deep
and get your lead guitar or your drum overheads to sound
just so, through careful sound design and parameter
adjustment. With EZmix, you pop the plug-in onto an
insert or an aux, call up “UK Guitar Stack” or “Bouncy
Kick”, and you’re ready to go.
None of this simplicity would matter if EZmix sounded
cheesy or cheap, but it’s startling just how good its presets
can be. Even the base version, before you begin adding
on presets, is a fantastic value. With effects algorithms from

the geniuses at Overloud and a very solid
collection of 21 rack effects, stomp boxes,
and more, there’s something for almost any
tracking or mixing need in the plug-in.
What’s more, the base program’s solid
spread of programs can be easily beefed
up with extras in areas where the engineer
needs more options... and expanding your
options is as easy as purchasing an EZmix
Pack. These preset collections are stuffed
full of great sounds designed by ace engineers like Mark Needham and Chuck
Ainlay, and can be added for relatively little extra cash to allow users to home in on
specific genres and applications with ease.
In this case, the target is fantastic vocals,
and Vocal Toolbox succeeds on all counts.

vocal applications for pop/rock and
broadcast, at least in general terms: male
and female lead vocals, backing vocals,
