PLUG-IN OUTLET
iZotope Nectar Elements

Back in our March 2011 issue, Paul
Vnuk Jr. reviewed iZotope’s Nectar, a
vocal-centric plug-in that included 11 different effects in one convenient package.
Nectar has a highly configurable interface
with a lot of user control, a strippeddown/latency-friendly Tracking mode, a
powerful Breath Control algorithm with
massive lookahead capability, and an
Advanced Pitch Correction mode with
Celemony Melodyne-style graphic note
display and direct editing capabilities.
The end result was a plug-in that put all the
vocal tweaking tools a serious engineer
might need in one place for $299.
Now it’s 2013, and just as we were
assembling this issue for press, iZotope
released Nectar Elements, a vocal processing plug-in that uses much of the
same under-the-hood processing as
Nectar but delivers it in a simplified package at a much lower price.
What you don’t get
There’s no multiscreen interface with lots of
controls; everything fits on a single screen
and all editing power is concentrated in a

handful of sliders and a realtime eq/frequency spectrum display. The Tracking
mode isn’t available; Nectar Elements only
runs in Mixing mode, which gives full audio
quality at the cost of increased latency. The
Breath Control effect is gone completely, and
the Pitch Correction only works in Automatic
mode with a simplified control set.
If any of those omissions bothers you,
Nectar is still available and still amazing.
But for users who are interested in tapping
into Nectar’s processing power while saving themselves a steep learning curve and
a large initial investment (you can easily
upgrade to Nectar later), the straightforward approach of Nectar Elements will be
very appealing.
What you DO get
Nectar Elements has ten audio processors on board: compressor, limiter, gate,
de-esser, eq, doubler, reverb, delay, saturation, and pitch correction. Some of
these modules have their own dedicated
controls that appear in the interface at all
times; others are combined into generalized “supermodules” with overall controls
