same genre. Listen to how one song hits
the next. Have your engineer line them up
in Pro Tools and just clip the last and first
15 seconds of each song so you hear
how it flows.
~ Think about the doldrums of a release:
the middle songs. Do they literally feel like
you’re stuck in the ocean with no wind
or does it fly by with an infectious ease
that makes you want to replay? As a guide:
And how about the vinyl revival?
In 2007, vinyl sales in the US were
at $988,000. By 2012, they had
rocketed to $4.6 million.
These sort of statistics smack of an
audience ready to listen to an entire
release of a band or artist they like. Be
conscious of this. You’ve already
ensured through your song selection
that you aren’t putting out “fillers.”
Now ensure that the story line of your
release flows. Here are some tips for
that:
~ The first and last songs are the
bookends of your release and should be
treated as such. Don’t just fill in the first
five slots and let the others fall where they
may. There is an artistic and businessminded precision with which releases are
put together. Take notice of some of your
favorite albums, particularly ones in your

let the ballads and cover songs come a bit
later, but don’t end with a cover. Ending with
a ballad can, however, be a great poignant
close, à la Alice in Chains’ Black Gives Way
to Blue. And try not to line up too many
songs consecutively that have both a similar
BPM and similar melody.

~ Although it’s difficult, try to imagine
yourself as a first-time listener. What would
you want to hear after that song? Before that
song? Here again, ask people what they
think. Staying too much in your own head
can get lonely and counterproductive...
It’s been more than a handful of times
that I’ve listened to a song out of context
from a release and felt one way, only to
hear it in the context and feel completely
different. Take your time with this;
have some listening parties, invite
friends to the studio, get first impressions. Test your theme, test your flow,
test your story.
As your release takes shape, take
the time and spend the effort to record
it as well as you can. Get professional help if your own experience or
resources are maxed out. Be diligent
in getting the right sounds. As a rule,
don’t think it can be fixed in post. The
right instrument, mic placement and
tone will make the mix easy, and is
worth the work on the front end.
Take mixes in the car, on the bus or
train, listen to them on different speakers,
compare them to other albums. Consider
going to a mastering house for the final polish. Produce this album as if you were Rick
Rubin. Any PR person will tell you, a great
product sells itself, so put the time, energy
and passion into creating that great product.
