well with what I had before, and I thought the
Modular Kits looked like an even more efficient
mousetrap. It was just a natural, evolutionary step. It

The Modular Kits are based on freestanding
panels that don't require mounting, making
extensive use of both bass trapping and diffusion, with full-on high frequency absorption only
in certain strategic areas such as first reflection
points on the side walls and ceiling. The base of
each 2' wide Modular Kit is a bass trap, adhering to the well-established principle of putting
bass traps in the room corners, converting 6" of
floor space around the perimeter of the room into
wall/floor corner bass traps. Then either a
Diffusor, a Fat MondoTrap, or a high-frequency
absorber/bass trap rests on top, depending on
the placement in the room. By using these
Modular Kits around the perimeter of the room,
and supplementing their performance with some
ceiling panels, Brian created his most accurate

A Grammy®-winning engineer talks about getting the room right first

Brian Lucey's new Magic Garden Mastering facility in Los Angeles was a long time
coming, and the product of a careful design that evolved over 14 years and three
different rooms. Lucey is a Grammy-winning mastering engineer with four recent #1
records-The Black Keys' Turn Blue, Ray LaMontagne's Supernova, Arctic Monkeys'
AM, and Chet Faker's Built on Glass. His second facility, which he opened in
Columbus in 2010, was one of the first facilities to take advantage of the new
RealTraps Modular Kits approach, which can bring world-class sound quality to nearly any room, even if it wasn't designed from the ground up to have superior
acoustics. The brand new LA room takes the Modular Kit design to the next level.
Brian was quick to point out that the design process for him was also grounded in
his intuitive sense as an artist, as well as the empirically proven performance of his
previous rooms: "I fall more on the musician/intuitive side of things, so my interest in
the Modular Kits was a feeling that this would be a good solution for me. I did really

listening environment up to that point.
This strategy exactly coincided with Lucey's
first Grammy award for his work: "When I put it
all in, there was really just one afternoon of
tweaks in the Columbus room. The first record I
mastered there was The Black Keys' Brothers,
which turned out to be a huge record for them
and for me both. It was literally the first thing I
did-I listened for about 6 hours to a variety of
references, and I started mastering it that same
day." The album went on to go platinum and
won three Grammys, including Best Alternative
Music Album, in 2010.
