Using multiband compressors/expanders. I know
this seems pretty obvious, but really grasping all the
functions of multiband compressors has proved to be
very valuable for my mixes. My two favorite plug-ins
are the Waves C4 and the McDSP ML4000.
I value these tools because of the amount of control
they give me. I may want to control the body of a lead
vocal when it becomes too heavy on louder sections,
but let the brightness shine through. I might want to really hear the breath of the drums during the verses, but
when they're wailing on the choruses it could become

Lots of people use Mid/Side in mastering scenarios, but the recent proliferation of plug-ins that do M/S processing make many other applications feasible.
Examples of Mid/Side plug-ins include iZotope Ozone, Waves S1 and Center,
Brainworx bx_hybrid and bx_solo (free!), the Universal Audio Fairchild compressor, and more.
I will use this technique on any stereo signal where I want to control wideness
and brightness while retaining control of the more narrow material. This includes
drums, percussion, background vocals, certain synths, etc. I can brighten up the
sizzle and ambience of the drum room without affecting the kick and the snare.
I can raise the sides of the drums to bring out the sound of the room. I can brighten or dull the outsides of a background vocal stack without touching the narrow,
stronger vocals. I can make percussion tracks sizzle on the outside of the pan
spectrum without making the brightness overbearing in the center of the soundstage. If you can think of something that requires treating the center differently
from the sides, Mid/Side processing is a powerful tool.

too much. It's easy to pick and choose frequencies and
bandwidth to isolate and compress and expand.
Mid/Side processing. Basically, Mid/Side processing allows you to treat center-panned material
separately from material that's panned to the sides.
This lets you process centered material-usually the
powerful anchor elements like kick, snare, and
bass-separately from panned material like hardpanned instruments or room sound.

I hope that some of these tips and concepts can give you ideas to step up
your mixing game. I know the number of amazing and innovative production tools available to us can be overwhelming, but remember, it should
always be about the music.
Gain experience and proficiency on the technical side as much as possible
so that running the gear becomes instinctive and secondary to your mix
process. Eventually there will come a time where you're not even thinking
about gear settings, and you can just feel the emotion of how you're molding
the song to its completion. At the end of the day, it's music, and music is emotion, and your mixing should reflect that.
