Universal Audio AKG BX 20 Spring
Reverb Plug-in for UAD-2/Apollo

Created in the late 1960s and debuted at the
1971 AES Convention, the BX 20 was a high-end
flagship reverb by AKG-a high-end spring reverb,
no less. It came in a large wooden box, about as
tall as a grand piano, and rather than just featuring
stretched springs over a tray like those found in most
guitar amps, it used a Torsion Transmission Line or
TTL reverb that made use of a pair of large drums
with the springs inside.
Each tank offered a different sound and tone that
could be used separately or combined together.
Like most vintage acoustic-based reverbs, it offered
minimal onboard controls other than tank choice
and input selection, but it did have a remote box
(the R 20) to help choose decay time. Today these
units are highly coveted, but they are finicky. I'm
told that they are among those boxes where no two
sound the same, and finding a fully restored vintage
unit is quite rare.
Luckily, as has been done so successfully with
other studio rarities like the EMT Plate 250,
Cooper Time Cube, and Fairchild compressors,
the folks at Universal Audio have expertly modeled this ancient wonder as a plug-in for use with
their UAD-2 and Apollo devices. In addition to the
original's controls, Universal Audio also adapted
and added in the tone-shaping controls found on
the later model BX 10, plus some welcome "plugin only" offerings as well.
The plug-in offers a choice of summed mono or stereo input. That's not just
a choice of how you should run it in regard to your DAW channels (i.e. on a
stereo or mono track); it changes how the unit responds to the input signal in
regard to presence and width.
You can choose between the A or B tanks in true stereo, or a combination
of the two, where A is the left tank and B is the right. Tank A is a deep oildrum-sounding tank and the darker of the two. Tank B is brighter, with more
reflectivity and a metallic tunnel-like sound. There are global bass and treble
controls (as on the BX 10) and the modern addition of a lowcut switch. As
mentioned, each tank/channel gets its own panning and volume, as well as
a decay control from the R 20 remote. Although the decay times are listed as
2 to 4.5 seconds, I found each one to be almost double that in actual use.
Other controls which are plug-in only
are 0 to 250 ms of predelay, a parameter link button, a dry/wet mix control, and UA's standard wet solo for
using the plug-in on a send channel.
Finally there's a button labeled Direct,
which uniquely removes the inherent
dry signal present in the reverb tank
from the mix, giving you just pure distant reverb sound.
Sonically the BX 20 is more like what
one would expect from a plate reverb
than the plonky-clangy sound we're used
to hearing from spring units. It is thick,
metallic, smooth, swampy, and slightly
unpredictable. If you focus in on the
decay found in both tanks, you will hear
multiple tonal layers and resonances. It
has a very odd, almost floppy, attack
that is easily heard when predelay is used.
The level of detail is stunning, but at 34% power per chip, the BX 20 is one
of the very power-hungriest UAD-2 plug-ins, more than double the consumption of UA's other reverbs. Note that there is no real power savings in moving
from mono to stereo-you'll get 2 instances per SOLO and 16 per OCTO
regardless. That's because the BX 20 is actually a hybrid model, combining
algorithmic reverb modeling with impulse response convolution.
That said: power be damned! It's easily worth the hit, as no other plug-in
reverb sounds like the BX 20, period. I have been using it on vocals, drums,
guitars, and synths since I got it. Is it the best reverb plug-in ever made? If you
