saturated, in tandem with Elysia's nvelope
to give the 22" kick the sound and feel of
a 24" kick with a touch of grit and buzz.
Later I processed the entire kit again
through the karacter in M/S side mode,
as described above, to add sizzle to the
sides and some gritty low boom to the
middle. My goal was not lo-fi distortion,
but rather a touch of weighted, dimensional harmonics. The karacter came
through with flying colors.
Additionally I found that when dialed
in gently on acoustic guitar, the karacter
was good at adding subtle harmonic dirt
with a touch of upper-mid breakup. FET
Shred mode was great for adding additional weight and simulated amp
breakup on electric guitar tracks. One
cool trick here was placing the mono guitar track hard left, with the karacter effect
panned hard right in a touch of spring
reverb.
The karacter easily adds gentle life and
growl to dull DI bass tracks, as well as fullon overdriven bass tones that to my ears
rival and best many bass overdrive pedals. A prime reason is the ability to blend
the dry bass signal with the overdrive,
which maintains the tone and transients of
the playing. On vocals you can get everything from allusions of tape/transformer
weight to full-force Nine Inch Nails Trent
Reznor vocals, all blended to taste.

On the keyboard tip, I love the sound
of a real Rhodes through a guitar amp,
but often give that up due to noise and
rattle issues. The karacter offers the
sound and breakup associated with a
Rhodes through an amp, but as with
bass guitar, you can blend it with the
bell-like clean/dry Rhodes sound... and
all of it is free from amp noise! Synths
are a natural application here as well.

Finally, I admit I was skeptical about
using the karacter on my 2-mix bus; this
is an area where I would use it sparingly if at all. However, it is a great tool to
add analog grit and life to sterile MIDIbased DAW tracks. I even had success
gently thickening up an acoustic guitar/electric bass duet, and was surprised
by how much I liked the results.
Konclusion
OK, I admit it, I am gushing. I love this
little box. Why? Because after trying
many distortion/saturation plug-ins, patching in reamped overdrive pedals, clipping my microphone preamps in series,
and more-techniques which can easily
get over the top and out of control fast-
the karacter offers the amount of control,
blending, and sonic throw I have been
craving in a saturation/distortion box.
Oh, and if you act quickly, you can
get elysia's Vinyl Allstars version for the
same price as the standard model. All of
the elysia modules are being offered in
a 50-unit limited edition for the company's 10th anniversary, each with a front
panel laser-cut from an old LP. I got to
see them at the NAMM show, and they
looked groovy. (Sorry... had to.)
