Under the hood with Auria Pro
Auria Pro and Auria version 2 bring a new look
to the color scheme and surface design. It seems to
work much better at a quick glance, especially the
added color indicators for the panpots, aux inputs,
and other rotary knobs-see the opening graphic.
There are still two basic viewing modes in Auria
Pro, the Mix window and the Edit window. However,
in the Mix window, Auria Pro has many more bus
routing options, and the FX button at the top of the
channel strip now reveals a new tab in the pop up
window with choices for MIDI Control or Channel
Strip. In the MIDI Control tab, we have edit power
over instrument choice, parameter changes, quantizing, and levels. This is where you access all internal
and external software synths via Inter-App Audio
(IAA). In the Channel Strip tab we have the original
built-in compressor, expander, and equalizer from the
first Auria version, as shown in Figure 1.
The new addition of MIDI capabilities to Auria Pro
officially turns it into a full-on DAW. Anyone familiar
with the piano roll-style editing of MIDI sequencers
will be familiar with how MIDI is handled in Auria

Pro-it's basically touchscreen MIDI sequencing and editing. You can export
MIDI files from your creations out into the world. I will add that most of my
work with the original Auria has been self-contained in my iPad... I only
export automated stereo mixes from the multitrack recordings. However, the
flexibility is there if you want to export your tracks for import into a different
software program.
In the edit window viewing mode is where we will find the MIDI edit
access. This is where you graphically change the MIDI notes, velocity, and
length by drawing on the screen in a familiar style. (See Figure 2.) In the
audio channels, a new Realtime Audio Warping feature should be very
useful, and realtime audio quantizing is now available.
When you designate an Auria Pro channel strip to be MIDI, the Input button in the Mix window becomes an Instrument button and you will see a small
music note above the level display. "Instrument" is where you assign patch
programs of the MIDI instrument you have chosen to use. There are three
powerful internal MIDI synthesizer choices included with Auria Pro-Lyra, a
sample player using 4 GB of samples, and FabFilter's One and Twin 2 analog modeling synthesizers (see Figure 3). You can, of course, use the many
other third-party MIDI software instruments that are available for the iPad.
On the hardware side of things, the new support for external hard drives
is a big deal for those super-large projects, allowing a much greater
amount of storage. For connection and communication with the mic preamps, I just use an inexpensive USB to Lightning adapter into the iPad.

Other observations and uses
The FX bus gives you the option of choosing several internal reverbs,
delays, and other digital devices-which can be purchased within the app
at the WaveMachine Labs store-but it comes with basic processors that
do the trick as well. This is where the processing power can be challenged
when using the Auria Pro app, as to be expected.
I have successfully used the reverb and delay devices provided in the Auria
app with no CPU overload problems. (The demo file that comes with Auria
Pro, 28 channels with MIDI instrumentation, plays fine on my fourth-gen iPad.)
As a final polish to your projects, mastering capabilities have been added to
Auria Pro, making it an even more amazing studio value.
Oh, and don't forget the Undo and Redo buttons! What a glorious concept... it's nothing new on conventional laptop/desktop DAWs, but on
Auria it's a treat, saving the engineer's day with one press. A couple of
times, I've had funky crashes whose origins I haven't yet tracked down; in
every case when that's happened, the tracks I thought I'd lost were
restored by the Undo function. Don't panic!
I'd also like to give WaveMachine Labs a shout out for its excellent
customer support. Early in Auria's history, I discovered an issue where
Auria was refusing to save files that were longer than one hour. I contacted the Auria support team; they had a new version for download
within a week. Kudos for that.

Conclusions
I have to say there isn't much on the negative side for Auria Pro or for
WaveMachine Labs from my experiences. To be honest, the product
sounds so great and works with such ease that it has been a reinvigorating experience for me in my studio... especially for creating topnotch
recordings in a live situation.
The new integration of MIDI sequencing in Auria Pro completes the formula for me. This will open up uses for the many other iPad software
synths I have in my music arsenal. I see a new album on the horizon, and
I plan to keep it all in the Auria Pro domain, from beginning ideas to final
mixed and mastered stereo tracks-Auria has become the centerpiece
bringing it all together. My next step is to get an iPad Pro and couple it
with Auria Pro... I can see it now!
