were performed to a click track controlled by their drummer, so after the
show, Malaki was able to go into the
studio to touch up certain aspects of the
live show, while knowing they wouldn't
have to worry about tempos or fluctuation based on combining different takes.
First, the drums were re-recorded in the
studio and blended together with the
drums captured the evening of the show
at the Troubadour. The number one reason was to capture a clean and usable
overhead and room sound for the drums.
The live drums and studio drums were
edited down and tightened, so they
could be paired up together for a good
overall blend of tone, image, and size.
Next, Josh took the DI tracks from his
Avalon D5 and Radial DI boxes and
used those tracks to reamplify guitar signals. The tracks were reamped through
each guitarist's rig using a Shure SM57
on each cabinet, and fed into a
Universal Audio Apollo interface with a
Neve 1073 preamp emulation plug-in.
Vocals were also re-recorded, due primarily to excessive background noise
and cymbal bleed. Josh used a
Sennheiser e945 in the studio to recut
the vocals, which was the same vocal
mic used live during the show. A lot of
intricate EQ and automation moves were
made to match sounds and create a nice
balance during mixing.
Another interesting challenge was finding the right reverb to use. The
Troubadour is a 500-person venue in
West Hollywood, CA; finding a reverb
with the right feel and dimension as the
venue, which has wooden walls, was crucial. Josh used an iZotope Ozone 4
reverb plug-in to give the final mix an
overall "room" sound. The reverb was
used on the final mix bus, which is not
something typically done in mixing situations. Here it made sense, since the whole
track was live and needed the right ambience to work for a live recording.

There is no single specific right way to
take live tracks from a gig and get them
polished up and ready for release.
However, there are definitely steps to take
that are good, while others are worth
avoiding whenever possible. As more
bands and acts look to separate themselves from the herd of their contemporaries, having a great-sounding live release
is a nice item to add to the portfolio.
