The relative volume of any note can
also be adjusted through the use of the
Amplitude tool, allowing the ability to
"ride the fader" on specific words,
phrases or passages.
While it's always had excellent automatic pitch correction, Melodyne seems
to have attracted users who aren't afraid
to roll up their sleeves and get things

comprehensive processing. Scale
Detective also shows much of this info in
its interface; it works very well at determining the key signature of a piece by
analyzing either the melodic or chordal
content (Fig. 1).
This analysis comes via Melodyne's
improved note detection algorithm, which
adds a couple of new methods to the standard Melodic, Polyphonic and Rhythmic
modes. Polyphonic is now broken down

done the old-fashioned way, through it's
sometimes difficult and often tedious
work. Version 4 vastly expands both the
feature set and the 'tweak factor' with
several new and unique ways to creatively manipulate the clay of sound...
new tricks that will no doubt please both
our left-brained perfectionist and rightbrained creative sides.
Give us the 'New's
Evident upon even a cursory stroll
through the new and improved user interface, is just how much it looks like the
old one. The familiar and unmistakable
"orange blobs on a white background
with gray accents" motif remains, but
three new icons at the upper left lead to
some novel improvements.
Clicking the Info Pane icon gives quite
a bit of text-based visual feedback on
any blob you click on, including pitch,
frequency, and what (if any) changes
have been made to the parameters.
Activating the Track Header icon shows
which tracks are currently using plug-in
instances of Melodyne. This toggles the
visibility of these tracks (in gray) to see
your changes in relation to other tracks.
In the new Multitrack Edit mode, this
allows simultaneous access to notes
across different tracks, permitting more

Deeper and deeper
Once opened, the Sound Editor
appears along the bottom of the interface, displaying the audio in spectral
form via a series of vertical bars. In
Harmonics mode, these bars represent
the harmonic overtones that make up the
"fingerprint" of the sound. While pitch
and time have been the sole focus in
previous versions, the Sound Editor takes
on tasks pertaining to tone and timbre.
On either side of the Harmonics button are a Lo button which indicates the
harmonic info below the audio's median
center (as determined by Melodyne) and
a Hi button which focuses on the upper
half. In all three modes, each bar within
these "audio graphs" can be selected
individually or in groups, allowing for
an incredible level of precision. Playing
back the audio introduces little bouncing
balls inside these bars, dynamically
depicting what's happening with this
harmonic content in real time.
Two sliders to the right of this influence the
integral components of the overall signal.
Emphasis determines what is unique about
a sound's overtones by how much they vary
from their average position. Increasing this
brings out these peculiarities and imperfections of a sound's personality, while decreasing it makes that character stand out less in
a dense mix. Dynamics applies compression
to the signal, smoothing volume fluctuations

into two flavors: Sustain, for strings, organ
or synth washes and Decay for piano, guitar, etc. Universal is for analyzing and
time-stretching full mixes, but without the
DNA functionality.
The Add Random Deviations feature
serves to further "humanize" your tracks
with either pitch or rhythmic imperfections-labelled Drastic, Moderate or
Subtle. This is a great way to breathe
some life back into vocal stacks whose
parts have been overly corrected, or to
get your drum loops to 'loosen up' a bit.

slider in the other direction exaggerates
these same differences-a form of upward
expansion.
In EQ mode, the bars are separated into
individual musical notes throughout the
audio's spectrum. While most graphic EQs
have frequency bands of 1/3 octave, thereby affecting neighbors to your target frequency, Melodyne's EQ allows you to
address the boost or cut of specific frequencies within all three realms-audio, visual
and musical-with surgical accuracy. In
