Lewitt and the LCT Series
First let's get reacquainted with Lewitt and the LCT line. Lewitt Audio is located in
the heart of classic microphone country: Vienna, Austria. This is where CEO Roman
Perschon and his team design and engineer their mics, which are then built overseas
in Lewitt's own private factory in China.
All of Lewitt's LCT large-diaphragm condenser models share similar rectangular zinc
bodies with built-in mesh screening, finished in matte black for a very modern high-tech
Euro look. Internally each LCT mic is a transformerless design built around a clean circuit
board; the FET models feature electronic pattern, level, and filter switching on the body.
The LCT models use a 1" dual K67 style, center-terminated capsule with a
diaphragm made of 4-micron Mylar sputtered with gold. Each capsule's outer ring is
also visually striking behind its mesh screen in a bright dayglow green (on newer
models).
The LCT 640 TS
The LCT 640 TS, like its predecessor, measures 6.22 x 2.04 x 1.42 inches. In addition to its special abilities, it also shares the the original's feature set, which is accessed
on the front of the body via 3 push buttons and a backlit display. There are 5 pattern
choices: omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, supercardioid, and figure-8. There are 4 levels
of attenuation (0/-6/-12/-18 dB) and 4 highpass filter settings: Linear
(off)/40/80/160 Hz. Lastly, like all LCT models, the mic has an internal clip indicator
as well as a stored clipping history. Even if you miss the clip warning light when it
blinks, you can go back and see if a loud source clipped the microphone while tracking.
The mic comes comes with one of the company's proprietary LCT 40 SHxx shock
mounts, a foam windscreen, a magnetic metal pop filter, and a thick plastic Pelicanstyle carrying case, a significant upgrade from the black aluminum briefcase formerly provided with upper-level LCT mics.

(reviewed February 2013) and the multipattern LCT 940 with its blendable tube/
solid state topology (May 2013) to the cardioid LCT 550 with its amazing 0 dBA selfnoise (February 2016), Lewitt microphones
are building a solid reputation for great
sound, versatility, and dead-quiet circuitry.
It all started with the flagship LCT
640, the first Lewitt mic we reviewed
(February 2012). It was a stunning
debut for a company in its infancy, and
as Lewitt has grown up, so has the LCT
640. This month, we're taking a look at
the new LCT 640 TS.
The original is still in the Lewitt line, and
the TS is best thought of as a variation on a
theme. Its new trick is that you can take an
audio tap off of the microphone's rear
diaphragm and record it separately, along
with the front diaphragm. This allows you to
adjust the mic's polar pattern after the fact in
your DAW. It also gives you the ability to
use the 640 TS as a stereo mic. Intrigued? I
was, too. Let's see how it works.

Change your mic's polar pattern... in the mix!
Before we dive into the new TS-only features, it is worth noting that while both LCT
640 models are essentially the same mic, there are some slight differences due to
the addition of extra circuitry and some tweaks in the LCT 640 TS. Many specs, such
as equivalent input noise and signal/noise ratio, vary by only 0.5 dB, while other
specs like sensitivity are significantly different.
You can compare the full specs of the original LCT 640 on Lewitt's website, but the
specs of the new 640 TS are as follows: sensitivity 30.1 mV / Pa (-31.4 dBV) cardioid, 30.3 mV / Pa (-30.3 dBV) omni, 29.4 mV / Pa (-34.1 dBV) figure-8; signal /
noise ratio 83.5 dBA; equivalent noise level 10.5 dBA (cardioid); dynamic range
123.3 dBA; maximum SPL (0.5% THD) 133.8 dB with pad turned off.
The LCT 640 TS has a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response; it's a very flat neutral
mic with a gentle but wide upper mid/high end rise between 5 and 20 kHz that is
highest and tightest in Omni mode.
Two diaphragms, variable polar patterns... and a plug-in
As you can see above, the LCT 640 TS works like a standard 5-pattern microphone
in its normal state. However, on the left side of the mic body, a 3-prong mini socket
hides underneath a removable rubber cap. Here's where you attach an included mini
female to XLR male adaptor cable. Once it's attached, press and hold the center function button on the mic until the pattern lights dim and the center Lewitt logo lights.
In this mode, each diaphragm will now send signal to a separate output. The front
diaphragm goes to the main XLR out and the rear diaphragm signal is routed to the secondary cable. Each diaphragm will need its own phantom power, and you should use a
pair of well-matched mic preamps with matching input settings for the most accurate results.
