of Arthur C. Clarke's maxim about sufficiently advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic. Utility devices of this sort
tend to miss out on the glamour of the latest
and greatest limited-edition boutique instrument, but there's something about an iPod
Touch running a Moog Model 15 in emulation, controlled wirelessly by a twenty-yearold slider controller and a poly-aftertouch
keyboard the size of a pair of candy bars,
that's wonderfully sci-fi!"

Livid Instruments Minim

Bluetooth also supports entirely new
ways to interact with your gear. Robert
Dorschel tells us about the latest tool from
alternative-controller maker Livid Instruments,
which relies on Bluetooth for its magic.
"I'm already familiar with the build
quality of controllers from Livid
Instruments, which has been building
them since 2004, and I feel the Minim is
an improvement on that standard. The
OS X Editor app for the Minim is also a
major improvement over previous Livid
editors-it's easy to use and very reliable
(see the screenshot). The free sister iOS
app, Minim Music Lab, is a simple music

tracker/looper laid out like the Minim;
it's an appetizer to get you acquainted
with the Minim's Bluetooth abilities.
The Minim is currently for Mac OSX
10.10+ and iOS 8+. Windows 10 support is in development. The Minim
should work with the Bluetooth MIDI
capability built into Android 6, but there
are no third-party apps yet available
that use this feature.
The target audience for the Minim is
folks who want tactile feel in a controller
instead of a touchscreen app, along with
visual feedback from the DAW. It's a little
larger than an iPhone 6 and about twice
as thick, with (per Livid's naming) eight
Function buttons, eight velocity- and pressure-sensitive Expressive Pads, and five
Transport buttons, all of which are quite
bright and have user-assignable RGB colors. It's also got a Touch Slider for continuous control, with an LED ladder to
show its setting, plus two assignable
Side Buttons and a built-in Tilt Sensor.
All the controls are solidly made, feel
great, and react reliably and smoothly to
touch. The only exceptions are the Touch
Slider, which is quite jumpy when attempting fine movements, and the Tilt Sensor,

which takes some getting used to (we
don't think about this much when playing
conventional instruments, after all).
All buttons can transmit MIDI CC messages (with ranges), MIDI notes (with
ranges and even chords and scales), and
Sensitivity on/off for the Expressive Pads.
All controls can be set to independent
MIDI channels, with independent LED
feedback (color & toggle/momentary).
The most unique and convenient feature
for the feedback settings is that you can
choose who has control-the Minim or
your DAW-which makes for ease of
setup without being a programmer or
