7500 ms in Dual. Dual Stage is what an
LA-2A uses for its release, and this is an
intentional addition to the Tweaker.
The last control is labeled Curve,
which is both the Ratio and Knee combined. Lower ratios, starting at 2:1,
yield a softer knee that gradually gets
sharper as you make your way up. The
opposite extreme is hard-knee limiting at
a 30:1 ratio.
Tweaking around
For my review, I was sent a pair of
Tweakers for stereo use. Right out of the
box, I could tell that this is one of those
devices that takes some time and care to
learn. If you just grab it and start twisting
knobs, it's very easy to get lost, especially

and giving yourself some time to just
learn the Tweaker. My best advice is
start by using the Tweaker on percussive
sources, as this is the most obvious way
to hear and feel what the Tweaker is
capable of. To successfully pilot the
Tweaker, you'll need to work all three
sections together, as each one greatly
affects the others.
As another way to learn the Tweaker,
Gregory offers a nice collection of settings on the Kush website to get you
started. This includes a very credible
optical style LA-2A compressor emulation
that is perhaps a hair more aggressive.
On drums, the Tweaker is a versatile
compressor that can add thickness, sizzle,
or smack. It can smooth the drums out

when some controls operate clockwise
and counterclockwise vs. left to right, and
the Contour knob only works when Edge
Contouring is selected. None of this is
obvious when first using the unit.
I would recommend downloading and
reading the manual, watching some of
Gregory's videos at the Kush website,

and hold them down. It can saturate the
highs and give an illusion of vintage input
circuits and even a touch of tape. It can
boost the room presence or tighten the
drums like a vice. Limiting at 30:1 and
playing with the Contour control can completely shut a percussive source down to
a lo-fi chattering smack that I can't

describe any other way. When setting levels, this is a device where it's not only OK
to hit the red, I actively encourage it!
Beyond drums, I liked the Tweaker on
electric guitar, vocals, and keyboards.
Even after months with this thing, I am still
getting the hang of it. It can go from subtle and clean to twisted and over-the-top
with ease, and the Mix control is perfect
for blending the extreme with the dry.
Conclusions
This is one of those boxes that starts out
with a steep learning curve but is very
rewarding and incredibly versatile as you
learn to tame it. Its price is right in line with
most modern mono 1U rack compressors,
but it can do things no other compressor

can do. You'll need to save up, trust me-
when you hear what the Tweaker can do
on a drum bus, you'll want a pair!
