one you have ready to go. There's no
reason why you can't start working with
your live mics in your home studio while
saving up for studio mics. There may be
tonal limitations to those live mics, but you'll
be forced to get creative with placement,
amplification, and processing, and that will
make you a better engineer in the long run.

Exceptions to the rules

There are certain mics out there that
are designed and marketed for special
purposes. Some of them use unusual
transducers to create tones that you can't
get from other mics; others are tuned
and tweaked for certain types of signals
and are therefore less useful for others.
A lot of these mics sound very cool and
fun, and many of them can really nail
their specific applications as well as, or
better than, more general-purpose mics.
My advice on these microphones is to
try them, enjoy them, and add them to
your locker... after you've mastered the
all-rounders and know what they can and
cannot do. Specialty mics are often quite
sexy-looking and are described in glowing

terms by those who use them, but a lot
of the best records ever recorded were
made before any such mics ever existed.
A properly-placed LDC will do just fine on
kick, and a properly-placed SDC may well
give better results on winds than a clip-on
transducer. (And while I adore my Placid
Audio Copperphone Mini, I wouldn't
want it as my primary vocal mic!)

Plan for the future

One more thing: Mics should not be
throwaway tech. While your tracks will
benefit from more expensive mics in the
long run, ideally the less expensive mics
you start with should still be useful even

after they're not your only mics any more.
When you're finally able to afford that
really spendy mic you've been admiring,
you should know why you're getting it,
what you'll use it for, and what uses the
mic it's replacing will have in the future.
A mic locker is not something you order
from a catalog and unbox the day before
you start recording. It's a collection of
mics that you build up gradually, a palette
of colors for your tracks. The best advice
I can give here is: if at all possible, buy
one mic at a time and learn it really well
before you get the next one. In that way,
your mic locker will be a creative asset
that pays dividends for life.
