Kevin Hanna / The John Toms Dilemma
EQUIPMENT USED: Roland VS-2400, Fostex Monitors
with Berhinger headphones.
MUSIC: "When The Going Gets Tough" is a male vocal
rock song done in its entirety by Kevin.
RECORDING: In his production notes Kevin tells us that his
one man band effort was more from necessity than design.
Given that, he has done a pretty solid job in sketching out his
track here.
As with the majority of solo submissions we receive, folks
usually have a primary instrument and fill in the rest as best
they can. In Kevin's case we imagine that the guitar is his
number one, with bass and then drums filling out the order.
Recorded on a modest Roland VS-2400 stand alone multitracker, Kevin has done a nice job keeping his vocals front
and center. While we've heard better electric guitar tones
in our time, Kevin's crunchy rhythm and slightly psychedelic
leads give an edge to the track that works well.
Moving on, it seemed that through our monitors the bass
guitar was on the round and pillowy end of things and as such
not well-matched with the bright guitar and martial-style drum
kit. Speaking of the drums, they are obviously not Kevin's main
instrument. That said, the part that he laid down captures the
essence of where he wants the track to go, and in that regard
they establish a great template for further exploration.
SUGGESTIONS: Kudos to Kevin for all of his work here.
Wearing this many hats can often be frustrating and
time-consuming. As far as suggestions go, we would encourage
him to take a little of the harshness out of the electric guitars
and try panning them out from center in order to open up the
stereo field a tad.

Regarding the bass, we would suggest that a few dB
increase somewhere in the 300-500 Hz range along with
a bump at 1 kHz would add some needed punch to the
performance. Lastly, without the aid of a primary drummer,
things are likely to stay as they are. Employing a click track
down the road may be a good compromise, moving forward
until that day comes.

Jerico Niezen
EQUIPMENT USED: Ibanez guitar, Yamaha keyboard,
Korg effects pedal, Digitech JamMan loop pedal, Zoom
RhythmTrak drum machine.
MUSIC: "Sea Blue" is an "Ambient Rock" instrumental
recording done in its entirety by Jerico.
RECORDING: With the aid of a few simple tools Jerico
has fashioned a pretty successful track here. While looping
has become a huge presence in the live performance scene,
with everyone from Ed Sheeran to veterans like Bill Frisell and
Keller Williams spreading the word, we have come across
relatively few submissions that utilize it.
Not so for "Sea Blue", however. Building on a drone-style
keyboard bed, Jerico creates a mesmerizing melody with the
aid of his Ibanez guitar and Digitech JamMan loop pedal. The
beat is provided by a Zoom RhythmTrak drum machine (we
assume the RT-234), and wisely Jerico kept it to an appropriately
basic pattern. Far too often we have experienced folks getting
in way over their heads programming drum parts that no
actual drummer would or could play, usually to the detriment
of the rest of the track.
We also liked the way that Jerico handled the outro of his
track. One of the things we've noticed with many burgeoning
loopers in live settings is a certain level of clumsiness as their
various looped parts coalesce towards a firm ending. Fortunately it's
all smooth sailing here, in large measure because the drums are
faded out well before the track comes to a close.
SUGGESTIONS: With surging popularity and advancements in technology, looping is likely to be with us for the
foreseeable future. In a real sense it has redefined the
whole one-man-band scenario, especially in the live performance arena, allowing for a multitrack type option outside
of the studio. In Jerico's case, he seems well on his way
within the genre, and we encourage him to create to his
heart's content.
