Germany ranks Number one for international education policies

iN Brief
Bilingualism Found to Improve Brain Health
Bilingualism may help delay the onset of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, and bilingual individuals are better able than those who are not bilingual to maintain their mental skills later in life, according to research presented in February at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Bilingual speakers were found to be better able to focus, to prioritize tasks, and to multitask. “Overall, bilingualism should be seen as an important tool for healthy aging, along with exercise, diet, and other lifestyle choices,” said Ellen Bialystok, a coauthor of the study and professor of psychology at York University in Toronto. “It’s also another reason to encourage people in multicultural societies like ours to keep speaking their native tongue and pass it along to their children.” The study was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Alzheimer Society of Canada and published in the journal Neurology.

Which country ranks highest when it comes to encouraging international study? Germany, according to the British Council’s Global Gauge report, released in March at the Council’s Going Global conference. And where does the United States stand among the biggest players in the international education arena? In sixth place—behind Australia, the United Kingdom, China, and Malaysia. The new ranking of university systems is based on a British Council analysis of governmental international education policies and takes into consideration factors such as openness, degree quality, extent to which degrees are recognized, support for international students, and degree to which students are encouraged to spend time overseas. Germany landed in the top spot thanks to its commitment to a number of international education-friendly policies, including making changes to its curriculum, such as providing more courses in English to lure more international students, subsidizing costs for international students, setting and working toward a national goal of at least half of all university students spending at least a semester abroad, ensuring quality control of its universities’ branch campuses; and establishing rules that allow international students and graduates to work in Germany, reports Inside Higher Ed. Ranked behind the United States are Japan, Russia, Nigeria, and, in 10th place, India.

Business Schools urged to embrace Globalization
A business school group recently released a report urging undergraduate and graduate business programs to globalize so they’re better able to prepare students for careers in today’s increasingly competitive job market. The report from AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), titled Globalization of Management Education: Changing International Structures, Adaptive Strategies, and the Impact on Institutions, notes that in today’s global economy there are higher expectations for graduates to be armed with global competencies. AACSB’s Globalization of Management Education Task Force developed the report to help business schools embrace globalization in ways that are “mission-appropriate, manageable given available resources, and meaningful to the stakeholders being served.” The report is free to AACSB members, and available for purchase by nonmembers.
